Not Charging, Or Recognizing

OK, I have reviewed the other questions that are similar to my own, but not one is actually the same problem. I just received a second hand 10GB 3rdG ipod, from a trustworthy source. The ipod has been working fine for them. However, when I received it, it immediately needed charging, because the battery was low. So I tried to hook up the ipod to my computer (I'm using a Dell computer, brand new this year, as well as Windows Professional), unfortunately the ipod was not recognized in ANY of my ports on my computer. Now, I have read that I should RESET my ipod...however I cannot turn the ipod ON, in order to do so. It is completely dead now, after all my playing with it, trying to get it to work today. This is a christmas present and I am panicking, so if anyone has any ideas, or can help me out at all, that would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you so much...

You need to charge it.

Plug it into the AC/Adaptor and that should bring it to life.

Shouldn't it recharge using the USB cable?

No, USB cables don't charge 3rd Gen iPods.

Ok, so if i buy the power adaptor it says this:

"Use an extra iPod Power Adapter for home, office or travel. The FireWire based adapter allows you to charge your iPod when not connected to a computer. Just plug the adapter into a wall outlet and (depending on model) connect a 6-6 pin FireWire cable or iPod Connector to FireWire cable to your iPod for recharging (refer to your iPod User Manual for correct cable type). "

Does this mean I can connect the ipod directly to the power adaptor...or do I need to have a cable as well to connect the ipod to the adaptor...I'm so confused...not very good at this stuff as you can see!

I believe you're going to need an iPod FireWire cable as well, as the AC Adaptor that comes with the iPod uses the FireWire cable. The USB cable you have likely will not work.
