HOW DO YOU TURN OFF YOUR IPOD!!
can someone please tell me how to turn off your IPOD. I held down my play/pause button for ten seconds and nothing.
Did you know if you do a google search for powering off your IPOD you dont get squat. I build my own PC and I can't turn off my own IPOD...lol:confused:

Ok first lets calm down with the language and anger. There is a simple solution to this. If holding the play/pause button doesn't work go into Settings -> Main Menu. Then put Sleep on your Main Menu. When you want to turn it off (standby mode) just select the sleep option on your main menu.

Hold button isn't on is it? :) You never know, happens to the best of us. Maybe just me then.

I did as you said and added it to my main menu. Hit sleep and nothing. I think I am going to return it. In the twenty minutes investigating this problem I have watched my power battery indicator go down by a third, while no song is playing, just paused. Can you stop a song or is it always on pause until you play a different one? What is the screen shot for when the Ipod is in sleep mode or standby?
# 4 Re: HOW DO YOU TURN OFF YOUR IPOD!!
There is no stop button, only a pause button.

See? We are better than google when it comes to the ipod :)
(Edited your title to exclude the expletives)

try a reset (hold play and menu at the same time)
# 6 Re: HOW DO YOU TURN OFF YOUR IPOD!!
The battery meter is inaccurate - this means it does not acurately reflect the charge capacity.
despite its going down or up, if you have fully charged it, it's fully charged and will go for about 7 or 10 hours, depending on the model you have

ok thanks for everyones help......I can get it to standby, no screen, when its plugged in via usb. I can not get it to standby when its not hooked up to my computer. Is this how the Ipod works.....only standby when hooked up to computer? That cant be...i have the latest frimware..so......?
# 8 Re: HOW DO YOU TURN OFF YOUR IPOD!!
when connected to your computer, the ipod is busy updating and should show either a screen with a crossed out circle or a ok to disconnect check sign, in the latter case, you are free to unplug

yes after itunes and ipod synch up i can hit the play pause button on ipod and it will go to standby or battery charging. Now, if i unplug the usb it will stay in sleep or standby mode which is perfect. The problem occurs when i use the ipod and then want to put in standby mode. So in summary, I can only get my Ipod to standby mode (blank screen) only after it has synched up with itunes by hitting play/pause button. It will stay off even after I pull the usb plug, but will not go to standby after I use it. And if the battery indicator is incorrect then my ipod would of fully charged by now, but unfortunately its still charging. So, my conclusion is I have a defective ipod. If i can not turn it off, it will drain power; which it is doing. Thanks for your help I am going to return it and get a Creative Muvo....

To these people who for whatever reason need to have an "power off" button i say:
Super fast standby is better, as you can just take the pod out of your pocket and Immediately play it.

Sorry to bring up this old thread but its the only one I could find that has a similiar issue as mine.
I have a 4g unit that is exibiting the same problems.
You cannot put the unit to sleep. Holding down the pause/play button it sits there in the same state. I added the sleep menu item and choosing that it just sits there as well.
If I plug the unit into the wall I can get it to go to sleep with no problem at all, but as soon as it is unplugged from the wall there is no way to get the unit to go to sleep.
I tried the mutiple ways of resetting it to no avail. The last thing I have to try to do is to restore it as a last step. I am away from my computer until Sunday so I won't get a chance to do that until then.
I did call HP support just for giggles, they told me to do all the things I had already tried. Mostly resetting it and making sure I wasn't pushing too hard on the Play/Pause button (rolls eyes).
Anyway has anyone else had the same issue with their ipod where it refuses to go to sleep? EVen if I pause it and let it sit it won't go to sleep on its own.
After I try a restore and that doesn't work I guess I will try to exchange the unit.
Looking for other ideas/ or other people who have had the same problem.

As a side note I tried setting the sleep timer and that actually worked. Still can't put it to sleep manually though.
# 18 Re: HOW DO YOU TURN OFF YOUR IPOD!!
This sure is a curious situation. Seems like you have done all that you should do.
Can you set the iPod down, making sure nothing is playing and don't touch it and let it go to sleep on it's own? Should go to sleep in a minute or two...

Nope letting it sit it just stays where you last left it sitting there draining the battery. It definatly has me puzzled. I guess the last thing is the restore and after that I don't think there is anything else I can possibly do.
Unless there is something in the diagnostic mode?
This is a brand new Unit, I only just loaded music onto it 2 days ago. I used it all day yesterday being able to make it go to sleep whenever I wanted. Last night I was having some issues with trying to sync it up with the firewire cable but I think that was more related to the card than the ipod. I was able to sync it fine with a usb cable. I plugged it in to charge it. Woke up this morning and tried to use it and then sleep refused to work.

It is very curious.
If all your music is safe on the computer, I'd give the restore a try...
