problem updating firmware on 4g 40g

Hi,
I have a 2 fold problem. Firstly, I dropped my ipod a while back and half the lcd was cracked. picture (http://www.largeprojections.com/images/ipod.jpg)

The ipod still worked correctly and i got used to seeing just 1/4 of the screen.

Yesterday, i upgraded the firmware and it failed. I could make out an image of a power outlet. So i looked and found Daedus' simlar post from a few days ago. I followed his instructions of

0) Take iPod to a completely different computer and download 3.0.2 firmware.
1) Plug ipod into AC wall socket
2) Do hard reset (hold select + menu)
3) Once apple picture comes up, hold LEFT and RIGHT at the same time until it beeps and turns off ("disk mode", apparently some ipods do different things to show this worked)
4) Plug unit into firewire/usb and computer
5) Run iPod update software and chose "restore"
6) plug ipod back into AC to complete install

But this did not solve the problem. My ipod won't do anything as far as i can tell. It will not turn on, i have tried to do all sorts of resets but have no idication of it working or having power. I don't hear or feel the hd turning. I have left in on the direct power outlet to charge for some time. Does anyone have any suggestions before i send it off to have the lcd replaced?

Thanks,
Chuck

Just so i don't get your hopes up I don't have the solution for your problem. But i'd thought I'd share what happened to me and see what you think.
I had a similar problem. I downloaded the 1.2 update and the instalation failed. After that all I got in my PC was a firmware failure message with a disk error in it.
I was able to restore the mini several times and re try to install the update but it would always fail.
I was then able to install the 1.1 update and run iTunes. But the farthest i got was to upload a couple of songs when I got a message saying that my software was too old and it couldn't continue uploading. After that I got a disk error message and that was it. I havne't been able to use tha iPod at all.
I know there's a bunch of people that have problems with the latest update too.
