Ipod = Kernel Panic

Morning!

When i plug my ipod into ANY mac running jaguar i get a kernel panic. Previously this ipod worked fine in all these macs.

Plugging different ipods into these same macs does not recreate this problem.

Annoyingly i am not able to even restore factory settings on my ipod since i cant get a connection.

I have reset the ipod, and I have run it in firewire only mode when connecting and still have exactly the same problem. A few seconds after docking it... the computer screen goes grey and i have to restart.

It appears that i am not alone in this problem, although searching various forums has failed to provide a solution.
I am posting here, with as much detail as possible in the hope that someone who has had this problem and solved it can help me out.

Two of the macs are fully updated with the latest OSX and itunes. One is running 10.3.5 and itunes 4.6, so it has been tested on settings from both before and after the lasest upgrades...

Finally i am not at all bothered about any fo the data on the ipod at this stage. I have backups, so any solution is welcome!!!

Many thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome, you could always get someone with a windows system to run the ipod software updater for windowsd, converting it to a winpod, then re-try to upload the ipod software updater for mac.

Before you re-restore (mac), get rid of existing ipod software on your machine, as well as plists...

On plugging the ipod into a windows system, i get the same result... their machine crashes!!
This is looking bad....

What is the correct procedure for connecting the pod using disk mode... do i set it to disk mode first, and then plug in the firewire, or do i do the reset etc while it is plugged in to the firewire?

Thanks

i'll try that when i get home tonight... havent got my AC adapter in work with me.

I'm actually off to see an 'apple genius' in half an hour to see if they can shed any light. I'll keep this thread posted on the results... hopefully there will be a fix!!!

I was worried that the hardware had been damaged. Last friday the ipod was knocked off my desk at work while plugged in... however i did use it later in the day...

Also.. i can plug the ipod into my mac before i log in... (so the log in screen is up.. nothing else) and then from another computer go to my mac /Volumes and see the ipod... so the firewire is deffinately working...

So confused??

Well...

the apple genius wasnt much of a genius and wasnt able to tell me anything useful.

he had no idea why it was crashing every mac it was plugged into and his best advise was to purchase a 'new shiny ipod from downstairs' grrrrrr

i think if its going to break as easily as this one perhaps i may try another manufacturor thank you very much apple....
