Engravingjjjj
Hello all,
Can anyone report on success or failure of non-Apple engraving on an Ipod? I've found a place that's will to do it (not easy, at least six trophy shops and jewelry stores told me they wouldn't touch it), but now I have to tell them whether I want standard engraving or laser engraving. I think I want laster engraving, since the only side-effect of this would seem to be a bit of heat for a brief time, as opposed to standard engraving which would be sustained high-intensity vibration the entire time. This is pure speculation on my part, however, so I'd be interested in hearing from anyone with experience either way.
Thanks,
Stanjjj

You know you can pop off the back of the iPod right?
I'd be wary of engraving the thing whlie your harddrive is on the other side of the metal. Do a search for "iPod replacement battery kits", and what you'll find is replacement batteries, but at the same time (and what you want) the kit and instructions for popping off the back of the iPod. Maybe then the laser engraving would go a little better?

Well you do know that taking the back of the iPod off will in turn void the warrenty, so unless your iPod isn't under one anymore, I wouldn't advise taking that iPod apart just to get it engraved.

How would they know you've taken the back off of it? Even if there's some type of tape like they have on some computer cases that says "VOID" when its removed, it will also say that when THEY remove it since you can't see through the case. Unless there's an electronic case switch that records in some sort of non-volatile RAM area I can't imagine how they would know you've opened it if you do a clean job.

Yeah, pop the back off and give it a go. I'd love to see a cool pattern engraved around the Apple on the back, sort of like those simple black tattoos you get. If you did a clean job of the removal then I would think you would get away with taking the back off of it, but then again Apple might not touch it if you had anything engraved on the back!

Final update on this: After talking to a number of places who wouldn't touch it, I finally found a trophy shop, the guy there said "we've engraved $7000 watches with no problem, I think we can handle this". 20 minutes later I had 42 words on the back of my working-just-fine-thank-you 40GB IPod. I'm now convinced it was silly to ever be concerned....
