You can purchase a headphone amp. This almost always improves clarity, bass, and overall quality of your music from the iPod. If you decide to get one, use it with line out (dock or something like Pocketdock with line out). An example of an affordable, portable headphone amp is the CMoy amp. You can do a search for one of these on eBay, or you can see if any are on sale at head-fi.org. They sometimes come in mint tins. Another good place to look is Headsave ( http://www.headsave.com ).

Even the best headphones sound better with an amp, and it's about the size of a deck of cards, so I can't really say I'd call it big.

i mainly meant is there anything that can be done in the ipod itself as far as settings go, or have i done all i can?? i do not think i will invest in external additions.

eugchen I know ipod sounds flat no matter what you do......I am an ex minidisc user (sniff sniff :( ) and if its bass and sound quality you want go with a minidisc I promise you won't be dissapointed, and no need for getting new earphones..trust me

well not just bass.......battery life only if you have a minidisc with a built in battery (last year mzn10, this year mznh1 which I was supposed to get), ( and I never played my minidsc at 50% vol always 90%.....none of that let me test my iPod at 50% vol....I listen to my portable player outside not in a morgue) and now the new high density line work as a 1gig removable hardrive too. lets not forget the top minidisc line weight 1/4 of the ipod maybe less.
oh did I forget customizable eq...hhaha
the only way I can describe the sound difference is it just seems that sound coming from a minidisc is more surround...richer....hits your ear with every high and low from every angle.

doesnt this entail buying minidiscs and burning songs on them? and how many songs can a minidisc hold? why in the hell would i want to do that when i can hold thousands of mp3's on my ipod? i may be ignorant, but i would think most people would say the ipod is so much more useful and practical compared to a minidisc player. correct me if i am wrong. the bass is not that much of an issue for to go out and buy another inferior unit in my opinion.
i just wanted to make sure i did all i could on the ipod to increase the bass.

1 gig per disc but I dont own a vcr dvd combo nor a video-digital image camera.
I wanted the best portable audio player "portable" meaning light and best meaning best audio quality.
and I just learnt the the hd line does act as a removable disk so 8 bucks or 1 gig of storage.
drop your ipod from your waist onto hard concrete.....does it work?
I have caught my minidisc wire during fast sprints and the thing flew so far I had to look for it.... did it 4 times of the course of a year.
with the case "that came with it" the thing had no scratch since its so light..............and hahah it was still playing after it flung 10 feet away from me when I rehooked it to my headphones.
but yes 20 gig is amazing on the ipod dont get me wrong and I do own one and I like everyone of my products but i know the diff in sound.
but whats the pint having so many songs that when you browse it it kills your battery big time.
ok fine do me a favour run the bat test at 100% vol I just want to know if I am getting correct perform
