Oh crap

Alright, so i have this 3rd gen 40gb ipod here and it reads a file error on startup. So, I have to restore it with ipod update. Problem is, ipod update still says Plug in ipod when i have the ipod plugged in. So I need to reformat it first. New problem- the ipod doesnt show up with the other drives (hd, cd drive, floppy drive). The ipod IS detected, and the drivers are present. The serial driver icon in the bottom right even says ipod detected, drivers installed. The ipod itself says Do not disconnect, and it says its in disk mode, so it should show up. What's the problem? How can i format the thing so i can fix the hard drive? Thanks.

mmm...
Did you install the original drivers for the iPod?
Are you using the iPod in its disk slave mode?

Yes, I have the drivers from my fourth gen on the computer. The ipod reads it is in disk mode when I connect it to the computer. If i try to start the ipod normally though, it displays the apple for awhile and then shows a picture of a file and an exclamation point.
