need help; folder icon but theres more...
Well, about 3 months ago the hard drive on my iBook crashed. Got it back, downloaded an iPod update and then my iPod acted up and displayed the foler icon. Put it in the closet until yesterday, and worked with it. Here's the deal:
It is stuck in disk mode, so I used the Updater to restore it. It restored it, then I manually restarted it and docked it. It opened iTunes and copied all my songs. Then I tok it out of base, restarted it again and got the folder icon back. Restart again, did the disk scan and after like 20 mins it gave me the disk icon with a check mark, indicating that it was okay. It then would not stop restarting, display the fodler icon, restart again. So I let it do this all night until the battery died. Now today I reconnected it, iTunes opened and said update completed. The screen is displaying OK to Disconnect and that's it. If I restart it, folder icon appears again. Did the drive scan and still said it was okay.
Is my iPod screwed?
Being an Apple convert it doesn't same much when both of your equipment's hard drives f-up after 1 week past a year.
Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the lounge. When you restored it you didn't plug it into an outlet? The message that comes up on the screen tells you to do this after restoring. You can either try it again and plug it into an outlet this time (not restart it) or just return it for service.

the first time, I did plug it into an outlet. the secong time it froze on "ok to disconnect" so I manually restarted it. I would LOVE to send it in for service, but the one year was up in August, and this problem started 5 days after the one year warranty ended. so I'm unless one of you here can help me, I am stuck with a $369 paper weight.
Thanks again.

HOLY #### I FIXED IT!!!!!!!
You can't imagine how happy I am. After three months, my iPod is back!! Don't give up hope anyone!! I have been working on this thing for a long ### time today. I kept trying to do the HDD scan in diagnostic mode, but it would just sit there for over two hours. Then I got creative.
You can use the iPod as an external disk, so why couldn't you format it? I would connect it and it would appear on the desktop then after iTunes said update complete it would go away. So I opened Disk Utility (OS X, under apps-> untilities) and restarted the iPod. It would show it for only a few seconds and then dissappear from the list, so that I couldn't select it to format. Kept restarting until finally it remained for a few seconds. Selected iPod from the list of drives, went to erase, and erased it. I then opened iPod software updater and restore the software from the latest 11-15-2004 update. It then just display okay to disconnect even after I disconnected it. Did a restart using menu/pause buttons, and BAM!! I had my menu back. PLugged it into the dock, iTunes uploaded all my songs. I don't have a paper weight after all! What a great thing to happen the night before finals week.
See, patience is a virtue.
Thanks all.
