Engravings question
Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. Hey,
This is my first post so I am sorry if this question has already been asked. I'm buying an iPod for my son and he wanted to have it engraved for his Christmas present. I didn't realize that it would take 2-3 weeks to have it shipped if it was engraved and now I am in a bit of jam! My question is, would a reagular engraving operation (Stores that engrave bracelets or rings, etc.) be able to engrave an iPod?? WOuld it be on a store by store basis...or does Apple have the market compeltely cornered?? Has anybody done this before and what were the results?? Thank you very much and hopefully somebody responds quickly!! Thanks a lot!

well, I dunno I think that if you engrave it on your own the warrenty will become void, since you're altering the iPod. Just something to keep in mind.
# 2 Re: Engravings question
Get it engraved by Apple.com. I believe I ordered my iPod (with engraving) from there and the accessories were overnight shipped. The iPod came 2 days after. I also don't think an engraving from a 3rd party would void your warranty. That is, according to the email Adam got when he asked if brushing the iPod's metal back would void the warranty. I believe the response he got was that altering the outside of the iPod doesn't affect warranty, as long as it's not opened. If your engraving place needs to take the back off to do it, then you might have some issues. I'm not sure how engraving an iPod is done.

The Brushed Metal mod does NOT void the warenty, I dont see how engraving would.

I got my iPod engraved by Apple (for free until Jan 10) and it took a week, to the day, from when I placed my online order and when I had mu iPod in hand.

I'd say that as long as the engraving doesn't pierce the back, it would, in warrenty terms, just be a scratch.

Awesome, ok, thanks for the help...one follow up question for macska...when did you order your iPod? Did it say that it would take 2 to 3 weeks in the order confirmation? I wonder if that is just a worst case scenario statement (taking two to three weeks to ship). Obviously I'd feel more secure if Apple did the engraving, but I think it would be better to have the Ipod without an engraving by Christmas and deal with it then. Also I wonder if it will be faster or slower during the Christmas season...so many questions! Thanks a lot for the insight!
# 8 Re: Engravings question
the engraving doesn't cut into the ipod just added an laser layer ontop of it so i believe its differnt them a lot of other engravers. just get it from apple.com and that would be your best bet.
# 9 Re: Engravings question
hey dude I ordered my iPod like a week ago and it arrived in about a week. don't worry about it. it's just a estimation.
# 10 Re: Engravings question
The problem is that so close to Christmas, it could really take 2-3 weeks to ship.

I'm figuring they have to cover their "arses" by stating the longest time it could take to ship (especially with the run up to Xmas).
You should be fine ordering it now.
3rd Party engraving will not void your warranty, providing they don't have to open the iPod.

Here is the page from the Apple.com store, showing you estimated shipping times and the last date you can order and have it arrive before the Holidays.

You'll notice for standard shipping and laser engraving, you have until Dec. 15 to decide... Or if you're worried you can always pay a little more for some expedited shipping.

Even at that, Apple has *NO* way of telling that you opend the iPod, unless you broke the case.

Thanks for all the help with my question. The order chart appears to be for American orders only, but I don't understand how shipping to Canada takes 2-3 weeks while America takes 2-4 days for the same product...I think I'll just have to take my chances!! *fingers crossed*

Customs might get in the way, but I dont know if there is customs from canada to USA.

Hey eddievaliant,
I ordered my iPod two weeks ago on the Canadian site (apple.ca) and it took one week door-to-door. It now goes with me everywhere I go :D
Just make sure you order it through the apple.CA site. There's no customs fees and it's shipped FedEx, so it will get to you likedy-split.

Forgot to mention the one week to ship was with the free shipping which is FedEx ground.
You can't get a better deal than that... free engraving, free shipping, at your door in a week.

Your son will not like the iPod engraved by a place like 'Things Remembered' in the mall if he's seen the way it looks on the apple site.
I can appreciate your position, but he'll appreciate the 'real deal' even if it came a few days after xmas.
Remember, they only pop the iPod in a jig and let the laser etch it, it can't take too long to do. A couple extra days processing time at most.

Is there a way to find out if the iPod was engraved or not without opening the shrink wrap?
So, I bought two iPod minis. One of which was engraved. They're xmas gifts. I forgot which iPod was for whom. Is there a way to find out without breaking the shrink wrap?
