Computer restarting?

I just got a new iPod, 20 GB and 4th generation, brand new) tonight which I am ecstatic about. However, there's one small problem: my computer restarts when I plug it in. I got through the registration info okay after a bit of trouble (see if my problem can be solved before i go into to much detail on that). I'm running through a USB 2.0 port which I installed on my Windows XP machine a while ago for CD burner use.

I've tried it three times: I open iTunes, and then plug in my iPod. The computer is okay for a bit, nothing happens. The screen on the iPod says "Do not Disconnect". But in a few seconds, my computer freezes up and spontaneously restarts.

Any help to as why this could be?

That it does, and many that my virus program will not get rid of. But this is not it...I think it might have to have something to do with my USB port.

Update: It's working fine through my USB 1.1 port on the front of my computer...but I had to unplug my mouse to get a port open. So taking my chances, since I had to have my mouse (although I could see everything was running smoothly in itunes), I plug it into the USB 2.0 ports that I was having trouble with with my ipod. And it works fine.

So the thing is this: It's not my ipod (it works fine through USB 1.1)
It's not my USB card (the mouse works fine with it)
It's the integration of both that somehow causes my computer to spontaneously restart.

Anyone?

New Update:
I've figured out it recognizes it perfectly through my 1.1 port but not my 2.0. So I'm trying to reformat it, but in the iPod updater it says "Firmware update failure. Disk write error."

What do I do?
