Same song on 2 albums

I'm wondering if there is any way you can have the same song on 2 albums. I mean I have Nevermind by Nirvana and also the Greatest Hits album; For a song like 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' it is on both albums but I seem to only be able to have it on 1 on the album lists. Is there any way to have the song on both without having 2 copies of the song?

yes... you just have to have two files of that song on your computer and open them both on itunes and then you can do it.

no, he wants to have one file on his ipod, that can be called from 2 different albums. to the best of my knowledge, it can't be done.

Vanillafiction, I think that stinkiedmb is right about having to have multiple physical copies of the song in order to have it appear on multiple albums.

Just my take, yours can certainly differ - do you need to have it in both places? For me, I tend not to listen to "Greatest Hits" albums straight through unless that's the only album I have for that artist. If I do have a greatest hits album for an artist where I have some of their original albums, I tend to do so more for rarities/singles/etc than for previously acquired album tracks.

If you already have "Nevermind", then I'd imagine that you'd prefer to listen to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in the context of that album, or perhaps as part of a playlist, than as part of a "greatest hits" collection.

As I said, you may well feel differently. If so, I hope someone out there has a bypass that will be of help.

Let's assume you want to keep all the original albums intact, and are trying to avoid duplicate copies, while maintaining the greatest hits album.

Go through the Grestest Hits album and find each song on its original album. Say your song is "smells like teen spirit", go to the original album, go to info for that song, and under the "grouping" field, type in "Nirvana Greatest Hits - Track XX". That way, if you create a smart playlist that has the search criteria with artist of nirvana, and greatest hits, it will only bring up those.

I suggest doing this rather than just dragging them into a regular playlist, because if you decide later that you don't really care that much about it, just delete the smart playlist, and all that hard work won't be lost!

I'm sorry if that's horribly worded, but you get the idea. The drawback to this approach is that in your iPod, the album "Greatest Hits" won't show up for Nirvana, but it will def. be in your playlists. I do this a lot for soundtracks, where I don't want duplicate copies.

That's really great, thank you. Will certainly give the smart playlist a go.
