Usb 1.1

Hey everyone, I'm planning on getting a 4g 20GB iPod very soon, but I have a fairly old PC (actually, the iPod would have 2GB more than my PC's hard drive lol) which has USB 1.1 ports instead of 2.0. I'm wondering if the iPod will still connect to USB 1.1? Because if not it appears I shouldn't buy one. Thank you.

well it'll connect and transfer songs, it will be SLOW and USB 1 can't charge the ipod so you'll need to get the firewire and USB cable from apple so you can transfer music over the USB and charge from the wall using the firewire side

The iPod itself doesn't come with the cables you mentioned? If not, how much more will it run me, and are there any other PC requirements I would need to do what you said?

I confirm it will connect and synch - I have one of those double headed cables so charging and synching are not a problem.

However I have noticed quirks that my 3G did not exhibit:

- at connection it takes iTunes ages to check the iPhod and show it
- disconnect equally takes ages, and a couple of times iTunes hung

I have decided I will try again to install an USB2 card I have, but last time I tried my USB tree got screwed up royally - unfortunately XP does not need drivers for USB2 since SP1, so it's not like I can simply reinstall the driver

So you're saying it WILL charge on a USB 1.1?

only if you have that combo firewire/USB cable availible from the apple website, it costs around $20

I don't have a firewire port though.

well the firewire end goes to the AC brick that attaches into the wall plug, the USB end is what goes into ur computer

Matrixsjd is referring to the Apple iPod Dock Connector to FireWire and USB 2.0 (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/72502/wo/Ge6YpdSrezv922DoyxUM973rmoa/2.0.11.1.0.6.3.11.18.2.2.5.1.1) Cable. With this you could attach the FireWire lead to the AC Adaptor, which goes into the wall outlet. That would provide the charge to the iPod. Now since the USB lead is included into this cable you can attach that to the USB port on your computer, which would provide the transfer.

The FireWire does not attach to the PC, but instead the AC Adaptor.

Do yourself a favour and get either a USB 2.0 or FireWire card. You'll increase your transfer speeds by around 4 times, will be able to charge through it, and won't need and extra cable set, which costs $20..

How much will getting a USB 2.0 cost me, approximately?

You can get one from Amazon for around $20-30 or so, they are quite cheap and the results are well worth it.

Alright, thank you very much.

EDIT: Would it be difficult to install myself?

I haven't tried it myself, but from the looks of it, it sounds pretty easy. You just need to detach the removable side of the PC unit and slide the card into its respective spot. If you need help try Googling it.

You're welcome. Also, I was just speaking with another Lounger and he told me that he just inserted his USB 2.0 card into the empty PCI slot in his computer...

Shouldn't be too hard,

Yup, positive, cos when it's plugged into it I get the dialogue box that says Hi Speed USB device plugged into a Lo Speed USB device

Yeah, it's kinda irritating though, cos I have two computers, one only with USB 1.1 and the other with FireWire, and the USB 1.1 charges it, but the FireWire one doesn't? Strange!

Actually, the iPod does come with the wall charger with firewire cable. You simply connect it to the wall and charge it up, and I think it's actually faster than charging via usb. Also, you can buy a usb 2.0 card for less than $10, just use www.froogle.com

no, in fact I got one of those aftermarket cables for about 20 bucks. However, maybe it's just me, but adding an USB2 Belkin PCMCIA card on my IBM Thinkpad has proven very difficult.

XP Pro SP1 is said to support USB2 P&P, but instead it screwed up my whole USB tree.

I have now put in SP2 and I'm going to give it another try as the higher speed is much appreciated

How about getting a FireWire card for my computer? Wouldn't that make things easier because I wouldn't have to get the USB cable for the iPod?

I think that the charging with usb1.1 depends on your computer. My ThinkPad T30 has usb1.1 and I use that for syncronizing with iTunes when I don't have many songs to transfer or just want to access data on the iPod.

Initial transfer was done with a usb2.0 card and still takes a long time.

usb1.1 is 11Mbit/sec.
usb2.0 is 440Mbit/sec.
firewire is 400Mbit/sec.

A firewire or usb2.0 card will run you next to nothing.

Personally, I have a G4 iPod, which ships with both a usb and a firewire cable. Being a PC user, I only use the firewire cable with the power supply (connected to a dock) and the iPod is never connected to the computer long enough to get fully charged anyway.

different strokes for different folks.

Since the mini was released all iPods have come with both a USB and a FireWire cable. This includes the 4G that you are looking for. Even if your USB 1.1 port charges, the transfer speeds will leave something to be desired. So either way get a FireWire card or USB 2.0 card. Personally I found FireWire faster as I get around 2 tracks/second with it..

Good luck,
