Trading Up an Unopened iPod?

I heard from a friend that if you have an unopened 20g 4g iPod, you can bring it into an apple store and pay the difference to jump up to the 40 gig version. Does anyone know if this is true?

Most places would need some kind of proof of purchase.Just think anyone could just come in with stolen products and get upgrades or money back?

Why don't you take it back to where you bought it in the first place?
