Ipod protective cases - how very middle class

Personally, I like my gagets sporting their original profile and showing the marks of time and usage.
I fail to see the point in wrapping your mini in a rectangular condom or metalic case. Anyone else agree?

now i got a mental picture of someone shoving an ipod in a condom...

anyways, id feel more comfortable that its somewhat protected. If there's anything i hate, its getting scratches!

A Vaja case is, at worst, Upper Middle Class. Especially, if you get cases to match Cell phones, and PDAs. Very classy, and very expensive.

But what's the point of fretting about scratches and superficial damage when you're constantly using the unit covered up? It;s like those people who stick carpet on their car dashboards so the sun dosen't discolour the leather. What's the point?

I can see the argument for protecting it from serious damage when snowboarding or something, but for general knocks and drops the mini is very robust. I've droped it a few times onto the apvement and its fine.

It's more of a British thing....a running joke about the middle classes is they rank material goods over family and freinds. They'll spend Sunday after noon cleaning and waxing their cars, for instance.

I personally believe things are meant to be used and show the signs if age. You enjoy them more that way.

yes, because they aren't new anymore.

Whats wrong with taking care of something expensive, so you don't need to buy it again?

This thread title and the above explanation gets a one out of a possible two points on the job of making any kind of sense.

# 11 Re: Ipod protective cases - how very middle class
well, I already had the idea of turning my iPod water proof by slipping it into a (non lubricated) condom .. it cheap, it's effective, it's fast to put on and it says: Hey, I don't give a #### what you think!

plus, I suppose that it will discourage anyone from stealing the device!

Anyway, why add extra size to the iPod with some sort of protective case?
klang at 2007-11-15 15:57:17 >
# 12 Re: Ipod protective cases - how very middle class
I think skins make the iPod look cheap, particularly iSkin. Don't you want to show off your iPod and how sleek, shiny and pretty it is?

Cripes, just keep it in your coat pocket, don't drop it, and you'll be fine. Skins are a ripoff.

# 13 Re: Ipod protective cases - how very middle class
Why do so many people care what other people do with their ipods. If you don't want a case, don't get one. If you do want a case, do get one. Just don't ##### about other people getting them.

# 14 Re: Ipod protective cases - how very middle class
Because this is a forum about ipods...there are limits to what you can talk about. Anyway, go ahead and continue covering your ipod in an ugly plastic wrap. It's your choice.

# 15 Re: Ipod protective cases - how very middle class
Meh, my iPod was naked for the first 4 months that I owned it. It got scratched to hell and I didn't find that particularly attractive, and I always had to worry about getting scratches on the screen (I did get a fairly large one, which does affect functionality). Also on hot days, the metal back got all sweaty and felt terrible. Getting a case and a little extra protection is worth it for me.

edit: I just realized this was the iPod mini forum, but most of my points still make sense. :p

I love to keep my possessions looking nice and protecting them is a big deal to me. I have a cover for my ipod. I am very clumsy at times so I wasnt to protect it. Other times I realize how much I enjoy its beautiful design and let myself take it out of its bag to show it off. There is no reason to cover something up all the time. The character issue is true. I do not have a bra on the front of my car. I bought it because it looks nice, a fairly important factor that goes into several factors I consider when purchasing something, why would I want to cover it up. Like the mothers couch on Everybody Loves Raymond.

# 17 Re: Ipod protective cases - how very middle class
I like the looks of my iPod without a case too, but sometimes, it's not making it look different that is the issue. Sometime people buy cases for other things like exercising or more functionality. It's not like the earbuds are so easy to control, so a pocket to put those in would be nice. Basically it comes down to each person's preference. Not everyone likes cases, but those who do, like to have options. I don't think it's a class issue at all.

Odd that you can't say ### (not-straight) on here but you CAN use Jesus as an expletive. Hmmm...

# 19 Re: Ipod protective cases - how very middle class
Mad_kow I agree totally with you that having a case on your ipod has nothing to do with class. And I have to say that the comment made about the middle classes putting material goods first is slightly offensive. I agree that using a case does detract from the looks of the ipod but I like to look after my possessions, especially when I spend a lot of them. Also another benefit is getting a good price for it second hand when you want to upgrade. And by the way we have three cars in our family and none of them have been cleaned for about 6 months - and we live in the country (i.e. they barely resemble cars at the moment)

My Mini chills in a Dooney & Bourke brown leather case that I bought to the ###-raping tune of $65+. I bought it so that it would coordinate with the tan leather interior of my Acura TSX, where it spends most of its time. Hardly middle class.

Besides, don't you remember, we bought the cheapo iPod, or we bought the most expensive one in a gig/buck sense, (depending on how you look at it) unless you consider the Shuffle, which, oh yeah, I also have on order.

Let's face it, all of the devices (iPods and the associated accessories) are superfluous, so why argue about why one is more useless than the rest? If it was all about money, we'd listen to free AM/FM radio. It's not, so why worry about it?

What's "middle class"? Can you buy it at Wal-Mart? My fuchsia Coach case isn't even available on their website anymore; just the message "Sorry, you've picked a very popular item." Yes, I know. I've had to banish two news crews from my porte cochere. Owning such an exclusive product has propelled me to instant fame. Why, just the other day, I was dangling it in front of jealous starlets at... oh what was that place... anyway, there were just *puddles* of drool on their table because they hadn't gotten to the website during that split second window of opportunity last month to snag even the black one; never mind the elusive fuchsia. I've even started accessorizing my accessories. This pink sapphire bracelet matches the mini case so well. ;>

Kidding! If you want one, I'm sure they'll have more soon.

I think if it is a situation where a person has money to burn they should buy it and be happy

I have a Speck Skin in pink to prevent further damage to a gif t that my mon put in half of the money for.

Just goes to show Different strokes for different folks.

P.s The crack about not smoking crack while typing is a classic (No pun intended)

Bottomline: If you don't like a iPod case (or iPod condom, if you like), don't put one on your iPod. I do because I don't want mine to be scratched, and even more than that, I'm a klutz, and my iSkin helps protect me from cracking the screen or any part of the case. Do what works, this works for me.

Perhaps People don't like to have a Four/Five/-Hundred Euro, US Dollar, UK Sterling Device getting trashed up right away. With all the Posts about iPods paying a visit to the Porcelain God, or just a case of Butter Fingers. An iPod can use all the help it can get. Well admittedly I do not like the look of my Sprek iCondoms I wouldn't let my iPod out of it for more then a very breif time to admire it and return it.

You know something my iPod's shiny metal arse is still shiny after six Months! I need to see about one or two hairline scratches on the Display though. :(

So yeah I'm happy with my iCondoms. Anyone who loves there iPod should get a Case! Allthough some Cases are more stranger then others. Like those for the Mini or the Shuffle. The Mini is housed in an Aluminimum Shell and the Shuffle?!?! Hay that CNC thing ROCKS! But really would this be an issue if it was say a RIO? Of course not. iPod = (EUR), (UK Sterling),(J Yen) or USD$. However you spell it it's M O N E Y !!! and who doesn't want a slice of that Pie?

I'll be getting a case (just got my mini yesterday - whee!), but skins are ugly and make the iPod look cheap. The Marware cases look slick.

Slipping your iPod in a (non lubricated) condom, making very clear to everybody that this IS an iPod inside an actual honest to God condom, would be considered very decadent!

Now THAT's the spirit!

Otherwise I totally agree. :-)

# 31 Re: Ipod protective cases - how very middle class
Obviously most people buy a skin or a case for protection. The first time I dropped my mini, the screen cracked. With my second mini, it'd be damn stupid NOT to get a case for it. I really don't mind tiny scratches and stuff, but I don't want to have to waste another 200 dollars if my iPod breaks.

After all, you've paid quite a bit of money (to me it is) for an iPod, why risk breaking it?

# 32 Re: Ipod protective cases - how very middle class
I had to wait almost a year to get my ipod. No way am I just going to let it sit there naked (except when charging). If you can afford to NOT have it in a case, that's fine with me. lol :)
