New guy with questions on organizing music

Hello everyone. Been reading the forums for a couple of days now and I still have a few questions.

I just bought an Ipod Mini for my wife for Christmas. I downloaded Itunes last night onto my computer that has all my music on it (about 10-12gb). All that music was ripped to my computer using Musicmatch. Itunes saw that and imported that into its software. Obviously there is more music on my computer then the Ipod will hold. So how does the Ipod know what to transfer to the device? Is that where playlist come in? If say I just wanted to transfer all of her Tim McGraw cd's to the Ipod, would I just make a playlist by picking the Tim McGraw albums? Or do I need to pick each song?

Second question: I have two computers, a laptop and a desktop (where the music is) If I download Itunes to the laptop, will I be able to sync the Ipod with the laptop and then go over my network to get the music?

Sorry for the long first post and appreciate any help that you folks can give!

By default, iTunes will create a Smart Playlist for you automatically which will contain enough music from the master iTunes Library to fill-up the iPod Mini completely. You can either let it sync this Smart Playlist with the Mini, or switch the Mini over to the "Manually manage songs and playlists" method of syncing, then you can drag-and-drop songs and playlists from iTunes over to the iPod.

# 2 Re: New guy with questions on organizing music
Hi,

Just had the same problem. Had a 20 gig Ipod that crashed on me. I have about 12 gigs of music.

I replaced the 20 gig with a mini and was trying to figure out how to organize the music. I realized that I almost always utilized playlists when I listened to my old Ipod. I then created about 15 different playlists and filled them up with 4 gigs of music. I then selected as a synching option to only synch play lists. This has worked out really well.

Hope this helps.
