Do you have a 4G? Because if you do, you won't be able to use Linux anyway.

No I have a 3G 20Gig

Ok, in that case head on over to:
http://www.ipodlinux.org/index.php/Main_Page
This is the iPod Linux website and has explains about what Linux is and does.
Here's some info though from the site:
So far, we have successfully ported a customized uClinux kernel to the iPod, and written a simple user interface for it dubbed podzilla. Many additional Applications have been written, adding many capabilities not found in Apple's firmware.
Our bootloader allows for you to choose between either iPodLinux or Apple's firmware each time you turn on your iPod. iPodLinux is currently safe to install on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation iPods.
Currently the kernel (2.4.24-ipod2) includes the following features:
Frame buffer
Audio device (8-96kHz 16bit little-endian)
Firewire
Directional buttons, scroll wheel & hold switch via tty interface
Remote control
Piezo
HDD support
FAT (and UMSDOS) filesystem support
HFS+ filesystem support
The following features are not present:
Power Management (suspend etc)
Battery Status
Flash support

It also gives you a number of new games, a calculator and an image viewer (in greyscale), amongst other things.

But is it safe to use and will it void my warranty in any way, thx 4 ur replies
# 6 Re: Ipod Linux
I think it probably would void your warranty because you're interfering with the iPod's firmware, but i'm not entirely sure. And in regards to whether its safe to use, i believe it is, though having never tried it i wouldn't know. You'd be better off getting replies from people who have actually installed it on their iPod.
I'm seriously considering this now though...

# 7 Re: Ipod Linux
ok if you do try it can you let me know how you get on thx.
# 8 Re: Ipod Linux
I've installed it on my 3G! It's not really much use ATM, as the actual song playing doesn't work that well. MP3s work fine, but VBR MP3s, AACs etc all cause Podzilla to freeze up. But it's a nice novelty to have on, and I'm sure it will get better in future releases.
Plus it won't void your warranty as you can just restore the iPod with the iPod Updater to get rid of linux and reinstall the iPod OS :D

dude i have it and its pimp it has five games and thats pimp alone
# 10 Re: Ipod Linux
So, why wont ipod Linux install on a 4G ipod? I would think its just upgraded 3G hardware, so it wouldnt make THAT much of a difference (in theory.) Reason is my friends kind of shun me out of the fact that I own an ipod because I havent put Linux on mine just yet, and until someone runs it with success on a 4G i wont. =)

If you are looking for stuff like this then make sure you have a look at Rockbox. It is very functional on the iPod, plays music, and offers tons of games.
Links in my sig.

iPodlinux will install on a 4G iPod.
I've done it several times
it is just 'not supported' by the iPL team.
# 13 Re: Ipod Linux
There are working iPL installers available for Mac and Windows 4G iPods from the iPL site.

# 17 Re: Ipod Linux
a video iPod is a 5G [fifth generation model]
I think the installer works for those,
you could try i guess...?
# 18 Re: Ipod Linux
If you want to install it on a 5G iPod, it's kinda tricky but you can do it. Head on over to the iPod Linux forums (http://ipodlinux.org/forums/) and search around there. I wouldn't suggest posting and asking this though. I believe that has been posted a number of times, plus they hate new people always joining, no offense.
good luck,
