Hmmm, maybe! if you make the ascii art in ipod's font and make it somehow fit in the screen space.

Google much?
"ASCII art is any sort of pictures or diagrams drawn with the printable characters in the ASCII character set."
from simple (http://www.ascii-art.de/ascii/my/) to not-so-simple (http://www.arkworld.com/ascii/other/calvhob.htm)

They have programs that convert images to ASCII art, and I would imagine that's how that Calvin and Hobbes picture was done.
In fact, I have a program that does it, downloadable here (http://www.imagespro.com/programs/1141/) .

Actually, that was probably made using a program. People are always amazed that somebody translated bits of Star Wars into ascii. Few realize that the person just dropped a .mov into a program and let his computer chug away at it for a while. Perhaps it was a bit more complicated and required the extraction of still shots, but trust me: it was automated.

@n3tfury: I often open threads of interest and type at them when I have the chance. This can be over the course of half an hour or more, sometimes. I should have refreshed before posting. Still, I feel that I contributed something new to the conversation.
@sejtraav: No . . . idea. . . but with the recent firmware hacks, you might as well just drop a real image in there instead.

yeah, i was hasty in replying to that, it's just a pet peeve of mine. at least you explained yourself. thx.

i don't think you can void your warrenty by getting a firm ware hack unless it's one which is going to damage your ipod by like making it blow up.
if anything goes wrong just use restore on the ipod updater.
# 15 Re: Ascii Art on ipod
K' perhapss it just me but, why does everyone call the iPodOS 'Frimware? Do you call Windows, Linux or OS X a Fimware too?
Will switching from Windows or OS X to say Linux, blow-up your Box? No not likely (in the long run...). It's just an OS Operating System Folks, not a Firmware e.g. BIOS Blowing that up will screw-up your Box and or iPod. Thankfully you can not change the BIOS on your iPOD.
That thing in the yellow circle is where you would / should be able to write to the BIOS (a.k.a Firmware)...
Note: This is a picture of my dead 5Gb G1 'Pod. I do not know if Apple left such a place to 'Diagnose' there latter models...

this is the only ascii i have found so far that will work on the ipod screen

any1 else found any?
# 17 Re: Ascii Art on ipod
@Ichijoe: We call it firmware because that's what it is. According to Wikipedia,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firmware
"In computing, firmware is software that is embedded in a hardware device, that allows reading and executing the software, but does not allow modification, e.g., writing or deleting data by an end user."
OSX is a proper operating system, unlike iPodOS as you term it (which is correctly referred to as "firmware"). The iPod firmware is probably run from a flash ROM chip on the board, not the hard drive like with OSX, Windows, *nix, etc. Yes, the BIOS contains firmware too, but that is not the only place read-only software is used.

It's definitely possible to get ASCII art on your iPod, but since the iPod doesn't use a fixed-width font for displaying text, it would be harder to do.
