3rd gen improvements......

What would you realistically like to see. If anyone is interested in working with me, I'd be willing to try to hack the firmware to change a few Minor things. All I'm really interested in is being able to turn "shuffle" on/off from the main menu. Also, does the backlight option on the main menu toggle "backlight always on"? If it does, I've misunderstood this feature for a long time. I leave my backlight always on and just manually turn it off if I don't need it by holding down the menu button. However, it comes on whenever I dock the ipod. If Backlight on the main menu is a toggle it will be very useful to me. The only way we will get improvements to our firmware is if we do it ourselves.

Well the way it is now you cant have the backlight on all the time from the front menu. While I am a uni student in computer programming, I havent really tried to do some ipod firmware hacking. I have however tried to do some work with changing the linux port to ipod (which went horribly wrong!)But the possibility that the 3rd gen firmware will eventually be totally hacked is so awesome!I'll tell ya, give those hackers another 3 months and the firmware for the ipod will be blown wide open. We've seen it with the graphics changing and how simple that is. So we'll probly see having the shuffle songs on the top menu, backlight always on, more games, different audio support, etc. Just wait a bit and you won't have to do anything.

I would like to see the option to remove songs from my playlists.
Also to be able to remove a complete playlist.
I wrote Apple the other day on their site for improvements, but I don't expect anything from it, especially since after I submitted it, the screen said something like. thanks for the suggestion, but don't expect a response from us.
Being able to delete a song would be nice as well, but seems difficult because of the limiited number of buttons on the ipod.

probably the one thing i want them to change most is to allow multiple artists (this is probably an iTunes thing though). I have a lot of songs that either feature another artist or are a collab, and I have to either stick it with just one artist (usually adding a "feat XXX" in the song name) or have both their names in the artist thing and the iPod thinking it's a different artist.

For example, I currently have 3 "Jay-Z" artists:
Jay-z
Jay-z and R Kelly (their collab CD)
Jay-z and Linkin Park (their collab CD)

That's just something that's been buggin me for a while...

and any other player for that matter. There can only be one Artist field the way tagging standards are set. I don't see it as a big problem and I have 3 "Dave Matthews": "Dave Matthews", "Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds", & "Dave Matthews Band". I'm really not that interested in messing with the firmware as we would probably get nowhere. I just wish Apple would give us an update........3rd gen/4th gen = not much difference. Why not give us some updates? I've bought 2 iPods from them and I can't even get a reasonable update. I really wish I knew how to code an OS to run on an ARM processor myself, then I wouldn't have to worry about what Apple does!

The availability of multiple On-the-Go playlists on the 3G, and that would make it perfect for me.

With linux with more games and picture viewing, I am good... With two OS's and multiple On-the-Go playlists... The possibilities are endless...

How do you set up different On-the-Go playlists. I have a 4G and am interested in making more On-the-Go's.

Thanks.

hmm Do you really think you can hack the firmware? If so this would be great.
