I hope your right, but i think we're reading too much into this tiny change of price and trying to make apples out of oranges (geddit :-D ). The 4Gs are still selling well...i think...and i doubt that they'll release a new one in the next 2 months. Maybe the summer though.

I realy don't want the iPod 5G to come out so soon as i've just saved up for a year to get my iPod 4gen 40GB. So....

no it's cheaper because a new manufacturing company took over making ipods and ibooks

Yeah, I would doubt this is a sign that the 5g is coming out in the new month or two. That would mean the life of the 4g was less than 6 months. Considering how well the 4g is selling, this just doesn't make sense.

So as long as a new iPod isn't released *And it shouldn't* (hint: 80Gig HD coming later)...

The mini has the same firmware/software as the 4G. So it is good for now.

Because that would just give away a possible secret of the 5G's interface.

I mean, didn't you read what the iPod makers said? I think I read it in the Newsweek magazine the day it was announced. The one guy said "After we developed the mini's interface we thought to ourselves *God, why didn't we think of this earlier?*"...

So why would they do something in the same pattern? AND while the 8GB HD will be let out later this year? So wait alittle bit to make MORE money...or do it now, and give a possible secret away?

I am not saying I know anything, this is just my theory...

So what happens to the price of the 4th G ipod then if the 5G comes out?

And why is it necessary to update every year? On one hand, it'll suck in some new buyers with new features but on the other, it'll make some people hold out on buying now.

The sooner the better. Bought my gen3 the first day they came out.

Hopefully they'll improve over the current iPods (longer battery life), and possibly an added feature or two (FM tuner).

I would agree with that... I think that Apple wants or hopesthat many new mini users (2G) will probably like it, and hopefully upgrade to the next iPod (5G).

If you work at circuit city why dont you just go into your AS400 (or whatever inventory system CC uses) and go into the inventory lists by manufacturer (Option 2, then Option 15, F5 )and see if they list any gernericly named iPods. For example, I work for a large retailer as well, and when palm was coming out with all thier new handhelds early in the previous year, I already knew the pricing and costs before they were anounced and people were still bickering online about it. Retailers that carry the prodcuts "USUALLY" know sometime in advance the slated price, especially now with vendors like palm and apple not allowing you to put out circulars with the instant/rebate savings applied to the advertised price. Often on certain items you will now see the large print price and then read below it and find that you are seeing the price "Before" savings. Making the said item acutally cheaper. Its an odd thing to understand if your not in retail.

Anyways, like I said, if you really think that Circuit City will be stocking new iPods any time soon, look it up in inventory and then let us know.

Palm Zire 72 was listed as "New Palm Handheld - $299.98"

Well... I don't think they care THAT much about how people feel... They care about making money... and realeasing an new iPod...would, make them money.

Because, people want to stay UP to Date, and In style, or whatever...

Yeah, that's what I would have thought if I hadn't been one of the few unlucky people who bought one of the first 1.8Ghz G5's. Then Apple came out with the Dual 1.8Ghz G5 only a couple months later for the same price. Granted, technology changes quickly, but comon, a couple months later? So don't count on Apple delaying the 5G just for their consumers. If their products weren't so damn good, I wouldn't buy from them ever again. However, seeing as how their products kick ### . . .
On a side note, what's been the resale value on iPod's? I've been thinking of getting a nice 4G 20Gig iPod, but in case that 5G does come out, what can I expect to sell my 4G for?

the 5g will come out sometime this year i have a 40gb ipod photo and i will just upgrade it for free with bestbuys warrenty, woohoo for me. Free ipods forever!!!

he maybe bought the warranty of best buy, which 1~3 years. so whenever ipod is broken, or just want to return, or exchange within that period of time, you can get free. no question is asked.

Man... I still have a couple leftover gift cards from Christmas. I guess I'm buying my 5G iPod at Best Buy when it's released. That warranty is awesome!

^^^^^An ipod 3.5g would obviously be behind the current 4g's, you probably mean 4.5. Anyways, I work at circuit city as well, and as far as I know, 4g 20gb is still going strong, and with more coming. Should be getting the new mini's soon, and not too sure about the new photo's. I don't expect 5g's to come out until mid-summer to earlier August at the earliest.

I fully hope the Gen 5's are brushed metal, grey, something along the lines of the Powerbooks.

im not bothered about 5G either im happy with my 4G id just like to see what it looks like.

If they built in an fm transmitter that took up no extra space and was intergrated into the firmware nicely, I'd think about it. I'm happy with my 4g (other then this increasingly annoying chkdsk error thing) and will probably keep it for a LONG time.
