If the 60 gig Photo is selling well, then Apple might look to the 80 gig in the future. Otherwise, nope.

80gb ipod ????
There's a paragraph about it on www.macrumors.com also:
''Toshiba, maker of the 1.8" hard drives currently used in iPods, has announced that it is planning to ship an 80 GB in the 3rd quarter of 2005. The annoucement of the drive comes a year after it announced the 60 GB version currently found in the iPod photo.
Unlike the 60 GB announcement, Toshiba has chosen to not name names of who might order this upcoming 80 GB drive, but given that the sizing of the device is relatively the same as the 60 GB counterpart, it isn't unreasonable to have it incorporated into the next generation iPod.
Additionally, Toshiba announced a revision to the 40 GB model slated to ship in the 2nd quarter of 2005. This revision is thinner and lighter than the current 40 GB model, which could lead to a thinner mid-range iPod.''
We will just have to wait and see

dude.. my whole laptop only have 80gb and its the best 15" apple powerbook.. 80gb for music... I just think its unpractical...
# 4 Re: here comes the 80gb ipod....
hmmm, When Apple finally gets iPods to 100GB, I think they need to start thinking of making iPod more than an mp3 player...
NEWays, 80GB would be awsome!
I would totally fill that up w/ pics/music/and backups from my computer :P

Well, you beat me! I was going to post the same thing but then I saw this thread. LOL, engadget is so great. If apple does come out with an 80GB iPod, I wonder how much it would be. I am thinking like $700-800. This new hard drive is almost 3 times more than my iBook hard drive. Gosh, that isn't cool!
# 6 Re: here comes the 80gb ipod....
If indeed a 80GB iPod were released I would think that would be a good thing, especially for those looking for a 20-60GB player.. They couldn't price it too high and 20/40/80 would be too much of a split. So I would think either the 20 is pushed out, making this new slimmer 40 the new entry level model, which would lower it's price, or they would make a "20/40/60/80" lineup.. To keep the 80 competitive with they couldn't price it too high so let's say it is priced at $600. This would result in the 3 levels below it to be crunched into a $300-550 or so range. 3 models in such a small range would need Apple to either lower the bottom level's price to distinguish the 3 models from each other, or give something to the top tier models (60/80) that the bottom ones (20/40) don't...
Either way if an 80GB HDD is found in an iPod it will only result in more choices for the consumer, a lowering of the other model's prices, or more features in the top models (Radio perhaps, extended battery life, etc..). Perhaps this 80GB HDD could be used for an "iPod video".. Jobs may have stated that they don't want to make a video player as they don't believe there is much of a market, but it is becoming somewhat more clear with the release of other PVPs that there is a demand for them, and a market share to be won.. Jobs may not want to make one, but he does want to make money.. This is a business and if the consumer proves there is a demand for a product then it is the responsibility of the business to make the product if they want to capitalize.. Also this is the same guy that once said that Apple did not want to make an "all-in-one" flat panel iMac.. ;)
On a side note, Toshiba also has 100GBs HDDs, which they have put into their new "Qosmio" laptop.. Could this mean 100GB 'Books are on their way...? :D

i think that if they are going to make an 80 gb ipod video they should make the screen bigger. it's hard enough to see photos.

I don't think its the HD space that is what is needed, rather the battery life for moving colored pixels and the backlight.
Apple could have 120 Gig player, but only 15 hour battery life, and when your viewing a movie, what is 120 Gigs going to do for you then? Just alot fo metal in your pocket...
# 9 Re: here comes the 80gb ipod....
How much will the 80 GB iPod cost if they decide to release one? I wonder if they'll lower the prices of existing iPod's to accomadate people who wouldn't want to drop a load of cash for it.
oops... sorry didn't see that

I'd gladly plop down $500 for an 80 GB model. I have a 30 G'er now, and it's too small. My mp3 collection is 53 GB.
