iPod flash reported facts.

"(approx 2.5" long, 1.5" wide, and just .5" thick), have no screen, and have pricing set at approximately $99."

how is that going to work without a screen? Especailly with huge ammount os space such as 1 gb of music it would be impossible to navigate through all that song.

# 6 Re: iPod flash reported facts.
Does a screen really add that much money? Think of all the cheap gadgets and toys you can buy for around $10 that have screens.

If there's no screen, then there is no use for a scroll wheel. They will probably set it up so that it uses a playlist and hopefully you have an idea of what your playlist is. And if you absolutely must have a screen, you can upgrade to the iPod mini. In fact, that is probably the main reason for no screen; to encourage people to step up to a better iPod.

No screen worked for Oakley's Thumps. For $99, I bet there will be a small amount of flash memory onboard. 256M tops.

i don't think any store has sold any Oakley Thumps, they're $500 and only have 256mb

The Thumps look like garbage, sound like garbage, and are about as durable as garbage! Rant over.
About the screen issue, I really have my doubts about there being no screen. With that kind of size, it wouldn't cost much at all to add a touch sensitive b/w LCD. It also is kinda' thick, for its W and L.

I think the intent is for one playlist to go on this thing at a time, so a screen wouldn't be too necessary. And if it keeps the price down, and increases shock resistance......................

Cassette players didn't have screens :P and in this crazy world people got by. Although if there no screen, that means the memory is going to be quite limited. 128 max and that's still alot of songs to navigate through, and that's like 30 songs to skip through!!

If it doesn't have a screen on the device than it will definitely have one included via remote or something similar. You simply cannot have an mp3 player without a screen and still make it easy to use...as Apple so often prides itself on.

I don't think it's going to be particularly great. I'd go for the mini if i were you, it's got much more space than this flash iPod will have, and it has a screen....

"Cassette players didn't have screens"

Tapes also had 14 songs on them...my 512mb iriver holds about 130- 150 songs with most at 160kbps and it's a pain sorting through that many songs w/ a 4 line screen. If the ipodflash has 1GB you are talking over 200 songs. No,it must have a screen of some sort.

That is by far the best flashpod idea I've seen. But look at all that wasted space...there could easily be a 3 line LCD on there above the buttons. Add a little iriver style screen on the front and it's perfect.

# 24 Re: iPod flash reported facts.
Who cares about the flashPod. I can't wait to get my hands on the iPhone or whatever is currently in development with Motorola.

My perfect gadget would be a combination of my iPod and phone. Ok so the bigger drives are going to be impossible but combine an iPod mini with a mobile and I would buy it tomorrow.

The only bugbear becomes battery life again so I guess hard drives are out for the time being which brings us back to the flashPod. Build it into a Apple designed, motorola built mobile. Give it a Gig of memory and I would be happy.

Even my SG$49 (~US$30) Creative Digital Mp3 Player 2 which I bought at the Creative Warehouse Sale has a screen. Although it doesn't display the track name, it displays stuff like track number and time elapsed. It has a screen though and nothing changes that.

# 31 Re: iPod flash reported facts.
If you mean more functionability than one without a screen then I would agree. I could go for having a little more screen a little less button and to be honest maybe a little less player. The player seems like it would be a little big for a flash job.

Hello!

This is my first post here in iPodLonge, but I have been around here for a very long time.

I was thinking about what other options Apple will have if it comes true that the iPod flash won't have a display. What about a spoken interface? maybe the iPod will speak to you the song names, the playlist names, etc.
Something like if you press next the iPod will tell you through the headphones "next track -this song name- by -this artist-" or something like "you selected shuffle playlist classic rock"...

Just a thought.

# 33 Re: iPod flash reported facts.
If it doesn't have a screen, it's not because of price. 99?? calculators have LCD screens and I'm pretty sure it costs less than a tenth that price to the company that makes the calculators to pay the overhead.

A playlist that lasts a gigabyte, impossible (improbable, at least innavigable).

Would be cool but probably not gonna happen: speach oriented navigation. You put on your headphones.
"Welcome"
"Select your submenu"
<<you click the forward button once>>
"Playlists"
<<you click again>>
"Browse"
<<You double-click the select button to skip ahead to artists>>
<<click again for the letter you want. You scroll thought the letters in a quick mode by holding the button while the sexy female voice says all the letters in a fast forward sort of mode. You stop on the letter you want>>

Blah, blah, blah.

The menu system would obviously be compressed a great deal for more simplicity. And since it is a flash system, you are expected, at least for the most part, to know what you want to listen to in advance. The playlists you know you'll listen to the most will be under the playlist menu. Not a machine meant for browsing. Not very userfriendly either. Still a decent idea.

But more likely than not, it will have a screen. Who ever said there was no screen was probably talking about the drive (card) and not the actual device itself. LCD's are cheap. That's that.

The guy who says this will fail 100% doesn't remember the release of the MiNI when everyone said the same.

EDIT: Sorry for stealing your idea. I posted before realizing there was a third page. What a coincidence. BTW welcome to the lounge (at least as a contributing member)

# 34 Re: iPod flash reported facts.
I personally do not see any point in having a flash-based iPod, I mean, with no screen, only 512MB (max) of space what would be the point, I think Apple should focus and making the iPod mini cheaper rather than producing a cheaper alternative to the iPod mini. The iPod mini, as is, at $99 would be much better than a screenless, low-capacity, flash-based iPod.

Would someone care to donate a copy of Photoshop? I had forgotten how long it takes on a PC to use Paint well. Took so long I almost forgot why I did it.

This is a nice way to keep it compact and user-friendly (I'd still stay with my 3rd Gen anytime).

Andrew, interesting idea. I don't think I would like it. The thing would have a tendency to break at the hinge, i would think so, oh yes. Personaly I would like the iFlash to be its own beast so to speak. CLick wheel for iPod and iFlash get its own piece of originality. Is it too much to hope for Apple to come up with another ingenious control or something for a new product? It might be, after all click wheel is mighty good. BUt I deffinitly like the iFlash being its own beast.

this is the one, its looks really good...who ever did it should of won 1st prize i think... but the other 1st prize is good too, thats just my 2 cents...My $36.00 mp3 player from target had a screen on it that displayed the time, song name, time elapsed etc. The new design should certainly be a super thin mini but instead of the 4GB hd, it will use flash chips, much more convenient than looking like everyother mp3 on the market, who wants the same old generic MP3 design...uh, not me!
