iPod on the road while travelling
Just sold my 4G 40Gb and bought a photo 40Gb - because I'm going travelling for at least a year so want to be able to view my photos on the road.
So, my only contact with PCs will be in internet cafes. I'll need to be able to do two things at the internet cafes: 1) rip CDs I've bought while travelling and upload them to the iPod, 2) upload my pics from my digital camera to the iPod.
I assumed this would be do-able somehow with iTunes but I'd prefer to use lighter software if possible. iTunes itself runs like a dog on my old home PC, and I imagine the internet cafes in the developing countries I'll be visiting will be similarly slow. I've never seen an internet cafe with a mac anywhere.
My big fear is wiping out my music while travelling... since there won't be an easy way to get it back on. I'm a novice iTunes user and I already managed to wipe the iPod - by first syncing music from my work laptop and then taking it home to sync photos from the home PC.
So do you guys think I could do these on the road updates using iTunes? I'm a novice user with iTunes so would appreciate some pointers. (I normally use J River Media Center, but it doesn't do the cover art or photos).
Oh yeah, a trick I found was to manually store the photos on the iPod then tell iTunes to sync the photos from that folder... outlined here (http://www.ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=60675) . This should help me keep in sync.

as long as your music library is on your laptop, you should be fine by using itunes.
if you wont have you music on your laptop:
if you need to load up new CDs on the road, i recommend ripping the CDs with iTunes, and then uploading the new tracks using other software, such as ipodagent. it will give you peace-of-mind that your music will not be lost. just be sure that itunes does not open automatically when your ipod is connected --> that is the critical element.

Hi stinkie, thanks for the quick response.
I won't have the laptop: "my only contact with PCs will be in internet cafes".
Your suggestion makes sense, to use ipodagent or something similar, but I'll still be stuck using iTunes when I want to add photos - so I guess this will mess up my music? Is there a workaround?
Humph. I get the feeling I'll have to wait until Red Chair or J River or some other 3rd partyer writes an iPod photo application.
Edit:
oops, this is the Problems board. I wanted the general board. I've reposted

Unfortunately, this is the case. The only application that currently supports photo transfer (and for that matter, Album Art transfer), is iTunes 4.7.
Hopefully some third-party app will support it soon. What would be nice for your particular requirements would be an application that can run from the iPod and index/transfer photos in without requiring installation on the local PC (since many cybercafes wouldn't be too keen on letting you install software).
This would work especially well with the Belkin Media Reader/Camera Link devices, which drop your stuff into the DCIM directory on your iPod. Something that could run from the iPod hard drive and process these would be really great.

No problem. I've moved your post to the general forum and cleaned up the cross-post. Please try to avoid cross-posts in the future (if you post in the wrong forum and think a thread should be moved, one of us Helpers/Mods will be happy to take care of that).
