Libertarians?

So I have recently been looking into the Libertarian Party. After reading about them both from their official site, the wiki, and other assorted pages, I find them to be a very interesting party, to say the least. I'm not sure yet as to whether I overall agree with them or not. Some of their stances I find to be laughably stupid, yet others seem unique and really intelligent.

So does anyone here have an opinion on libertarians?

For those who are curious, here is their official site:

The last refuge for freedom. Libertarians are all that can save this nation from ruin- not the right, nor the left can. It's time to get the gov't out of our bedrooms, wallets, and lives. Who can't get behind that?

Well, they just seem to dodge issues a lot, and not have a clear stance.

For instance, they fancy themselves as completely in favor of "freedom." Yet their party has no official stance on gay marriage, and members of the party have argued against it. They also have no clear stance on abortion.

Also, the environment section of their website pretty much avoids all the current environmental issues, albeit in an eloquent manner.

And then there are the huge, uncompromising statements such as "We should eliminate the entire social welfare system." Also their position on drugs (that drugs should be legal). These sorts of positions I can sort of see both sides of, but part of me just wants to laugh.

With respect to the areas you raised, I think you missed the big point. From what I understand, they place a great emphasis on personal freedom of choice as guaranteed by the American Constitution.

That said, I find their position on gun ownership decidedly troubling...

The claim that a gun is just inanimate object and that all adult citizens are entitled to carry one and to shoot anyone they think might be entering private property (whom the property owner might consider to be a robber ) is certainly dangerous.

I'd sure feel awful if someone decided to shoot at a stranger simply for coming to the back porch asking for directions...

Personally, I'd like for all arms to be owned by the appropriate authorities, but I realize the impossibility of that ideal; most especially given how many guns and other weapons are in the hands of illegal users.
