# 3 Re: Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update
Apple on Tuesday released Mac OS X 10.4.9, a recommended update for all PowerPC and Intel-based Mac computers currently running versions of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.
Mac OS X 10.4.9 Client
The company said Mac OS X 10.4.9 includes general operating system fixes, as well as specific fixes or compatibility updates for the following applications and technologies:

The update is available for download through the Software Update mechanism located under the Apple menu on computers running Mac OS X. It's also available direct from Apple's website in the form of a 72MB download for PowerPC-based Macs running Mac OS X 10.4.8 and a 160MB download for Intel-based Macs running Mac OS X 10.4.8.
Mac systems running older versions of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger can grab heftier combo updaters for both PowerPC (163MB) and Intel Macs (310MB).
Mac OS X 10.4.9 Server
Along with the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Client release, Apple on Tuesday also released Mac OS X 10.4.9 Server. The update is recommended for all Apple servers running versions Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and includes fixes for the operating system and various applications, services and technologies, including:

Again, Apple also provides larger combo updaters for Mac servers running an earlier version of Mac OS X 10.4 Server. The PowerPC Combo updater weighs in as a 216MB download and the Universal version as a 350MB download.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ] (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2567)

http://forums.macnn.com/69/powerbook-and-macbook-pro/322200/macbook-pro-not-going-sleep-needs/
Seems like there are quite a few people with this happening. Starting a couple of weeks ago, when I close the lid the computer doesn't actually go to sleep. If you go to the 10.3.9 Macupdate page, at the top there is a little paragraph that leads you to Amazon.
Haven't a clue if it's true, or just them trying to get commission.

I just installed the update, from the combo installer, on my dual 2 GHz G5 with 10.4.8. The computer rebooted itself (two startups) and the restart was **very** long. Very annoying, but apparently there's isn't any problem yet.

# 19 Re: Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update
To any of you intrepid upgraders out there:
If you have upgraded the Airport card in a MacBook (Core Duo) with the MacPro "n" card AND installed this 10.4.9 OS update, do you still retain the "n" functionality? There was a single report by an ADC member on another site a couple of weeks ago that installed the BETA 10.4.9 and said that he lost the "n" functionality.
Before I upgrade, I want to make sure this was either an anomoly or something related to it still being in BETA.
Anyone with this specific situation taken the plunge yet? Please provide feedback when you have it.

What is it with people complaining about slow bootups after an update (it seems like I see this all the time)? A good hunk of the update is being installed during the reboot process, replacing files that otherwise can't be updated. Therefore, the reboot takes a while.
The only real problem would be if the reboot slowness hangs around after the first time. But, then, who reboots that often to care?

Agreed. Given the fact:
* everyone with a Leopard seed who breaks the NDA talks about instability and 'general immaturity'
* my sources at Apple say 'not to expect anything very soon'
* Actual releases are usually a month after the announcement, this announcement hasn't even come yet
* Spring isn't over until the 21st of June
I don't expect Leopard anywhere before June.

This update does not break hacked front row. It seems to work just fine after updating to 10.4.9
# 31 Re: Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update
But does it break one's hacked copy of front row?
Yes, I get a blue screen on my back up partition with hacked front row on this update. Good thing I learned after the last update.
Why cannot Apple just give us a machine with consumer feature sets and pro expandability? Some of us work as a pro from home and want 1 machine for it all. I need hard drive space and the speed of a Pro and dual monitors, yet want Front row as much as the next guy...
But my Front Row enabler seems toasted after this update.

I just think that's what you're led to believe. I myself have a strong suspicion there's a super secret build inside Cuper and all developers are being had. A lot of the bugs that were in the build before the current one are still there, it just strikes me as a bit suspicious the huge amount of bugs Apple left unfixed. Internal builds are always ahead of what developers get, sometimes over a month ahead. We're coming up on two years in development, there's a suspicious amount of bug for that much work IMO, and mistakes they made with Tiger will be reduced for Leopard.
# 33 Re: Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update
Good! Better they take the time to lock down the issues and stabilize the build than risk shipping an nw operating system release as broken as that... other... OS :smokey:

As one person pointed out, a launch for Leopard at WWDC is unlikely is if they do not give it to developers till after the keynote, everyone would be rushing to get it installed on their laptops and that would not leave them anytime to play with the system before going to the developer sessions.
Sounds logical to me. I think we will see Leopard sooner than June.

Well, the procedure would be for Apple to announce the release a month before WWDC. Then they send the Gold Master to the DVD-pressing facilities who will have three weeks to press an enormous amount of DVD's, both for retail/upgrade as for new machines and send them to stores. At the release, a month later, there will be enough in stock for Steve to say "for sale now".
This would give developers enough time to play with the final (or near final) version before the general public has it.

We're coming up on two years in development, there's a suspicious amount of bug for that much work IMO, and mistakes they made with Tiger will be reduced for Leopard.I definitely think there's something to this. We know that Apple has stuff intended for Leopard that devs aren't even getting a look at - so why wouldn't they leave a few bugs in to throw people off the scent? They know that NDAs aren't going to patch leaks, so it's better to just throw a red herring out there.
Seeing as one of the Apple Design Awards at WWDC is for best Leopard app, I'd be extremely surprised if Leopard isn't out at least a month prior to that. People are going to want to get familiar with it prior to the workshops and stuff. And isn't Steve's keynote on the last day of WWDC?
The more and more I think about Leopard at WWDC, the less sense it makes.
I think we'll see a ship date announced at NAB, and it'll be the same day as a totally Leopard exclusive Final Cut 6.

OS updates from Apple always result in a slow reboot (caches cleared, updates being made, whateverthere are numerous reasons; the second restart should be much faster). Furthermore, the double-reboot is also normal in many updates. If you read the documentation that goes along with the updates you will usually see these things mentioned.
In fact, many bugs you see after an update vanish after your next reboot (if you even see any). I reboot a second time myself before I do anything just to avoid the hassle. I cant remember a single time in all my Apple history that Ive suffered a crash or major problem after an update, either, but I know a lot of this has to do with my avoidance of third-party OS-altering utilities.
Updating now, well see how it goes.

Update was smooth. First reboot afterward was slow (normal) and OS loaded a little oddly (normal). Rebooted my second time and everything works great. Applications seem to load a bit faster but if I hadnt read that this is an attribute of this update I might not have noticed it. Photoshop CS2 still takes an eternity, CS3 seemed a bit faster (but hey, it was already fastIntel processor). Just repaired my permissions. Back to work. :)

I, too, have had exceptionally good luck updating my operating system over the years; and I, too, believe that avoiding most third-party add-ons is at least partly responsible. My philosophy is that computers are intrinsically so complex that anything you can do to simplify (that is, not to add even more complexity) is worth doing.

Just hope that they didn't lose sound quality... Once I finish testing 10.4.9 and deploy it on the laptops I'll have to check into that...
# 69 Re: Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update
It's definitely no dream...I'd say the audio is at least twice as loud! Other users have also reported this improvement.

# 70 Re: Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update
No reason to believe they lost sound quality. My 17" MBP speakers handle the audio up to full volume for most things which is now quite loud. The 17" MBP speakers are the best laptop speakers I've heard...still doesn't compare to a low-end hi-fi but what do u expect...

AppleTV probably requires it.
probably not, but who knows...apple.com says:
Apple TV Requires:
Macintosh computer with Mac OS X v10.3.9 or later; or PC with Windows XP Home or Professional (SP2).
no vista support? ;)

If the max level is increased, it can cause problems with peaking. Within reason, it's probably better that the user can chose this though, because some tracks are very quiet.
I think the 17" might have better speakers because of the room afforded in a slightly larger case. The speakers on my 15" are kind of irritating.

# 73 Re: Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update
I definitely think there's something to this.
All great points.
But no, Steve's keynote is always the first day at WWDC.
# 74 Re: Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update
Goodness me, it's all terribly exciting.
# 75 Re: Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update
Does anyone remember the time it took for Apple to go from their last update to Panther (Mac OS 10.3) before Tiger (Mac OS 10.4) came out? If I remember correctly it was pretty quick...
# 76 Re: Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update
I just think that's what you're led to believe. I myself have a strong suspicion there's a super secret build inside Cuper and all developers are being had. A lot of the bugs that were in the build before the current one are still there, it just strikes me as a bit suspicious the huge amount of bugs Apple left unfixed.
Great. If that's what Apple wants to do, that's up to them. But if they do, its sheer stupidity. The whole point of developer releases is to make sure developer's software works with your OS. If Apple releases Leopard and there's great incompatibility with other apps, make sure you place your blame solely where it belongs, on Apple's shoulders.
Internal builds are always ahead of what developers get, sometimes over a month ahead. We're coming up on two years in development, there's a suspicious amount of bug for that much work IMO, and mistakes they made with Tiger will be reduced for Leopard.
Apple has notably left bugs open for a long periods of time. That's not new for them. Plus, if they're busy adding in all those super-secret features and stuff, they probably aren't working on bug fixes at this point.
All I can say is that the earlier it comes, the more likely its going to have problems, both within itself (because it hadn't been tested by enough people on the outside in enough configurations with enough third-party software) and incompatibilities with third-party apps, all of which is going to keep people from upgrading. So, there really isn't a need to get it out earlier, if people end up holding off until June anyway.
And with all the problems vista has with compatibiltiy (amazing how much of MS's own software is incompatible), do we really want apple to face the same type of bad press?

That's what I thought, that the idea of a keynote is to set the tone for a conference and often to kick it off. The Mac dictionary definition pretty much says this.

I'm not sure this is an entirely comparable scenario, though - I think that if anything, 10.3.9 was rushed to get Panther dead and buried in time for Tiger, which was ready to go long before 10.3.9 hit. I suspect this is going to be different.
And not everyone will be holding off the Leopard upgrade - I, for one, will be buying my new machine the day it hits, as I don't want to get it now only to spend 90 two months down the line, especially if there could be a hardware bump between now and then.

AWESOME . Now this is wow. cant wait for Leopard. Thank you apple... Tiger is finished beautifully.

# 83 Re: Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update
I wonder if this will take care of the problem of some MacBook Pros not going to sleep properly as discussed in this thread:
http://forums.macnn.com/69/powerbook-and-macbook-pro/322200/macbook-pro-not-going-sleep-needs/
Seems like there are quite a few people with this happening. Starting a couple of weeks ago, when I close the lid the computer doesn't actually go to sleep. I would open it up to find the palmrests really hot and the battery drained. I've been using the apple menu to put it to sleep before I close it and that works, but I'd really like an official fix for this. Anyone else on AI with a MBP having these problems?
Maybe 10.4.9 will take care of it.
Crosses fingers, crosses self and hits "download"...
here we go!
I've been getting this on my Macbook (Core Duo); the palm rest is hot and the fans are blowing HOT air.
So it looks like 10.4.9 does not fix this bug. Anyone else having problems or have any advice?
# 84 Re: Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update
NealofThelake - Never ever update a OS before Digidesign has posted a compatibility note on their support pages. Its not the first time a new Mac OS X version has problems with a current version of ProTools. This is not really Apples problem...
That's why I have a backup of the system to revert to. I always make those before I update. I just wanted to get a warning out. 8)
# 85 Re: Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update
To any of you intrepid upgraders out there:
If you have upgraded the Airport card in a MacBook (Core Duo) with the MacPro "n" card AND installed this 10.4.9 OS update, do you still retain the "n" functionality? There was a single report by an ADC member on another site a couple of weeks ago that installed the BETA 10.4.9 and said that he lost the "n" functionality.
Before I upgrade, I want to make sure this was either an anomoly or something related to it still being in BETA.
Anyone with this specific situation taken the plunge yet? Please provide feedback when you have it.
Mine still says a/b/g/n in network utility, 130Mb Link Speed. ;)
# 86 Re: Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update
I believe they increased the time you have to hold the key down. To prevent accidental ejects...
Yes they did. And I have to admit, this was an unexpected nice fix. I can't tell you how often I've bumped that key and the CD tray would slide out. After a while, it got kind of annoying.

10.4.9 update hung on iBook G3, then would not boot past the grey screen, apple logo never appears. :(
Eventually booted into safe mode, (hold shift at chime) Repaired Permissions in Disk Utility and ran Automation in Onyx, rebooted. all good now ;) (after about 3hrs of mild concern).
Also 10.4.9 added iSync support for the SE K610i phone - woo hoo. 8)

# 89 Re: Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update
Cool.
10.4.9 fixed the Safari "Save As..." Web Archive format. They have fixed parts of it in previous updates but now it looks like everything is preserved just as originally presented/drawn. And so... now I can save the soon to be historic "Introducing iPhone..." graphic on Apple's entry page and drop it into SOHO Notes for preservation. For some reason, an archive of this Apple web page never drew up properly with the previous 10.4.8 release. It always doubled up and flipped the iPhone graphic (weird) when archived.

Probably April 6th for the record.

Used software update on my PPC iMac G5 and everything went fine. No problems.
I tried to update a MacBook Pro from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 and the system got hosed. Reverted back to 10.4.5 via archive and install and updated to 10.4.9 using the combo update via software update and it went fine. It's quite a bit faster now overall and in opening applications. I'm guessing that the download could have gotten corrupted or something.

I've gone for April 27th myself, it just feels right somehow. If I'm wrong though I'd say it would be before that date (April 20th, 13th or 6th) not after.
# 96 Re: Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update
10.4.9 updates BIND (DNS software) from 9.2.2 to 9.3.2, although 9.3.4 is the latest official maintenance release and 9.4.0 the latest current release.

Does it fix the iCal alert position bug? Many have experienced this weirdness - the alerts pop up off the right side of the screen (sometimes the left with certain computers) with only a small amount of the alert window visible. It started with 10.4.8
LOL I just started using iCal recently and had my first alarm go off a few days ago. It was off to the left side of the screen, so I pulled it to the center, and didn't think anything of it. An other alarm went off the next day, and the same thing happened, I thought it was really strange. So I set an alarm to go off in 15 mins, same. I had no idea why this was happening, at least I know now that it's not just me lol. btw, mine is on the left side. I want to see if this update fixed it. I'm gonna check when I get home.
# 98 Re: Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update
Just updated to 10.4.9 on a G5 iMac and 12"G4 iBook. The iMac worked with no problems. The iBook now has lost its wireless network. I try to connect to my Netgear router (which my iMac and a Dell XP machine connect to without any issues) and it returns a message that my network doesn't support WPA Personal. This only happened since I upgraded. I tried reloading my OS from boot disks - the OS worked but the wireless remained dead. I then upgraded again to 10.4.8 but still no dice. I have tried rebuilding permissions which basically exhausts my trouble shooting abilities for OSX...
Everything else seems to work but the wireless...
Any suggestions about what I should try next?
cheers
Greg

My G5 iMac took to 10.4.9 like a Mac should (no problems) but now I find all the system keyboard short cuts don't function eg. control eject to display restart / sleep / shutdown options. I really miss this. Why did they do it and is anyone aware of how to get this working again?

Apple changed them ever so slightly so there's a delay to stop you ejecting by accident, they work, just hold eject for bit longer.

# 104 Re: Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update
ITFinanceGuy,
Your comment regarding Leopard natively supporting Windows APIs has piqued my interest. Do you have any evidence that would support such a feature, or is that purely "this would be awesome if..." Certainly that would be a HUGE selling point.
I would estimate that one new feature could bring a 25% sales increase overall and a possible increase of market share from ~15% to 25% within a year. Esp. from people who didn't want to upgrade to VISTA on their PC.
There are alot of people who should have Macs for the simple reason that they are simple, easy and safer to sue than Windows based PCs. People who missed the personal computer revolution like some people's parents or grandparents. Learning environments. Kiosks. Game users who don't have an interest in messing about with stupid settings and hardware/software conflicts. These are people who should have Macs and would have a higher chance of choosing a Macintosh over a PC, esp. if Windows APIs were natively supported by Leopard. Tha would pretty much make your list of reasons to use Windows drop quickly.
Cheers.

I was running 10.4.8 in a G5 Desktop and over a powerbook Aluminium, but right after installing the new update, both refused to eject any cd using the keybord, neither to open the tray. In fact, the "eject icon" on the screen does not show up either. I thought it was something overwritten in my system, so I reinstalled 10.4.0 and the upgrade to 10.4.9 and there it was the same problem.
Definetely I stay with 10.4.8 until Leopard, but I won't run to 10.5.0. I will wait 10.5.5 or something, once Apple has corrected any problem.
