Apple store change may hint at Logic overhaul
Apple Inc.'s online store has suddenly stopped offering a recent cross-platform update to the company's professional audio production software, leading to speculation that a complete overhaul of the software may be imminent.
A reader on Monday noted that the $49 Logic Pro 7.2 Crossgrade package -- an update that delivers new features and Intel Mac support for users of PowerPC-native Logic Pro 7.0 or 7.1 -- is no longer available for purchase at Apple's online shop.
The move may foreshadow plans by the Cupertino-based company to revamp the software in a sexy new outfit and under a new brand name, that is if recent rumors pan out.
Apple has four booths at this week's Musikmesse Frankfurt international trade fair for musical instruments, music software and computer hardware. And according to a French audio blog, it has invited local retailers to a briefing on the eve of March 26th, about one day before exhibits open to the German public.
It was that same blog site which last month helped stir rumors of a major Logic revamp, when it reported hearing rumblings that the professional audio application would be replaced with a completely new product that would only operate on Apple's upcoming Leopard operating system. At the time, the blog site speculated that Musikmesse would make an ideal fit for such an announcement.
The last major update to Logic from Apple came way back in September of 2004 when the company introduced both Logic Pro 7.0 and Logic Express 7.0
Update: Apple has similarly removed the Final Cut Pro Crossgrade product from its online store ahead of next month's National Association of Broadcasters conference, where it is widely expected to introduce Final Cut Pro 6.0.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ] (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2603)

the professional audio forums / rumor mills have been working overtime on this too.
some people believe that the successor to Logic 7 will in fact be named something else, not Logic 8.
people are also under the assumption that the new DAW is going to introduce a reliance or ability to utilze touchscreen control surfaces... in some new innovative way other than simply putting a touchscreen overlay on a traditional monitor.

"PROLogic" - although this would violate Doby's rights to the name
"AppleTOOLS"
# 5 Re: Apple store change may hint at Logic overhaul
I do believe that Logic Pro 8 will be announced at Musikmesse this week.
I do NOT believe it will be touchscreen..the cost involved would outweight the benefits IMO. My eventual goal is to have the Mackie controllers for mixing.
My opinion is that LP8 is going to be a huge update with big UI changes and lots of mature features. Hopefully the number #1 request of Sample Accurate editing in the Arrange window will finally see the light of day.
I'd love to see a new revision to the EXS sampler and hell while Apple is at it why don't they license Redmatica's Keymap (http://www.redmatica.com/Redmatica/Welcome%20to%20Redmatica.html) while they are at it. It takes editing in EXS from tedious to jaw dropping in 3 seconds flat. I'm certainly looking forward to using it.
Here's hoping that audio editing functions are MAJORY enhanced. Give us something like Beat Detective but in the Apple way. Make LP8 a peer application for Final Cut Studio. Improve the plugins even more and add features.
Apple has improved the FW drivers for audio in Leopard as well which is great for many FW interfaces especially the bigguns like RME Fireface and Apogee Ensemble.
Improve the Notation features and really juice up Waveburner.
It's been 2yrs since Logic 7 was announced. I know moving to UB slowed things down but lets back on track and get LP8 into musician hands.
# 6 Re: Apple store change may hint at Logic overhaul
This'll be out tomorrow, I reckon. Along with some new hardware.
# 7 Re: Apple store change may hint at Logic overhaul
Yep, there are a couple of weapons-grade software updates on the way. Neither programme has been overhauled for at least two years and are required. Octo-Macs at NAB as well I should think.

As some have speculated, Apple may introduce octo core systems soon. I hope that the new FCP can use them. Currently with dual xeon 3.0 (4 cores) and 8 gigs of ram when rendering a movie in FCP the system can only use a fraction of the ram and only 27% of the cpu to render the movie. With only 28 meg per second write speed to the disk and 67% idle cpu what would I do with twice as much capacity?

Well, Leopard should help you there. It breaks the 3GB RAM limit per app that exists in Tiger; ie. it moves to full 64-bit memory addressing. At that point FCP should use considerably more of the available RAM and likewise for the CPU. A faster hard drive may then be needed of course to keep up with writing the output to disk but that clearly depends on what you are doing with FCP at the time and which part of the hardware system is then holding you back!

Update No. 2: Amazon.de is offering pre-orders for a book on "Logic Pro X" that is not due for publication until April 30th...
That doesn't really mean anything... remember the book that was found (http://www.macrumors.com/2004/08/04/appleworks-x/) for AppleWorks X?
I rest my case.

That very well may help, but I think there is a huge bottleneck somewhere in FCP because we're talking only a couple 100 megs of ram use and the disks can obviously transfer files at well above 100 megs per second. This is a routine job - just join two flattened movies, no effects no filters, nada. Just render uncompressed from DV captured clips.

Not totally sure about this but posting it out of interest nonetheless. Apple could be about to preview Logic 8 tomorrow online so as not to overshadow announcements next month at NAB. The application could potentially be renamed as its such a massive overhaul. Having been under development for the past 5 years, it has features such as a brand new drum engine, built-in tuning and timing module (similar to Melodyne), innovative time stretching loops and improved movie scoring tools. Hopefully that all made sense to someone, were not very into music applications. NAB starts Sunday 15th April and is likely to bring Final Cut Pro 6, updated Mac Pros and Final Cut Pro extreme. How exciting
Make me happy Apple. Tomorrow I want to read all about the new hotness.

I wish I could be there, but I can't - I hope there are at least some hints of the new hardware.
# 25 Re: Apple store change may hint at Logic overhaul
If you want to see a glimpse of what Logic 8 (or whatever Apple chooses to call it) could look like, take a look at Soundtrack.
- The interface has been completely revamped and is based on a non-linear editing paradigm (instead of the mixing console paradigm of Logic)
- All the special effects, filters, etc of Logic are already there (no surprise here as they are all audio units)
- An asset browser similar to the loop browser in Garageband and Logic
- Logic already had the capability to import Quicktime movies into a global track
What is missing is the midi capability that is needed for synths, sample players, etc.
My guess is that Logic will be folded into Soundtrack because it reduces the number of applications Apple has to support. This makes sense as the overlap between Soundtrack and Logic today is considerable.
With Apple, expect the news where you don't expect them!

How can Apple introduce software that "requires Leopard" without first introducing Leopard?
If you would just get into the RDF, you would understand...;)
# 27 Re: Apple store change may hint at Logic overhaul
So that leads to one of two scenarios:
1. New Logic doesn't require Leopard and it's shipping today/tomorrow/Monday whatever.
2. New Logic requires Leopard, so here's the release date for Leopard as well.
I can really see this - and FC6 - being dependant on leopard though, and then all three dropping at once.

people are also under the assumption that the new DAW is going to introduce a reliance or ability to utilze touchscreen control surfaces... in some new innovative way other than simply putting a touchscreen overlay on a traditional monitor.
That's a ridiculous idea. All the hype around Apple taking touch screen out of automated museum exhibits and "into the 21st century" is overblown. A touchscreen would never be accurate enough to replace the fine-tuning controls of a mechanical mixing console. Also, Logic Pro is an application designed for, yes, professional studios, most of which are using very large displays mounted behind the mixing console, NOT within arm's length. Touchscreen would be so costly to develop that it makes no sense whatsoever to implement it if it's only going to be usable by a tiny fraction of the target group, and with questionable results. Nobody will want to redesign/upgrade their hundred thousand dollar mixing desk for the ridiculous notion of touch-screen mixing and mastering control.
I think the biggest changes in an update from apple will probably be a new, and extended partnership between Apple and a control surface company, to combat the great success Avid has had packaging Protools with both Digidesign and M-Audio product groups. Also, the new Logic will have to have greatly update notation tools, as the upcoming ProTools release will feature full integration with Sibelius, which was recently bought by Avid, creating an application with hardware support that will really be a "complete package", and difficult for Logic in its current state to compete with.
Of special importance may be that this will be the first real update to Logic since Apple bought Emagic. Logic 7 was basically Apple grafting a bunch of other applications which it had bought onto Logic 6, and then polishing it up in 7.1 and 7.2. Logic 8 (or whatever it will be called), if it really is a full redesign, could either see the product line revitalized by the new input from whoever Apple has brought aboard, or it could tank if Apple screws it up, especially since ProTools' next release will be pretty close to the "killer app" of the hardware world, as long as they polish up their sequencing and integrate Sibelius properly. The whole digidesign/M-Audio bundling and seamless integration options from M-Box through 002/003 interfaces through the professional line has really become this generation's industry standard, and the acquisitions made by Avid lately have given them the possibility of taking the all-in-one audio solution to the next level...

Your right, I don't think it will replace either, but augment... you know... in some "innovative" way. Most people that have done mockups of such a concept have depicted screens integrated into control surface (you even mention some possible collaboration with a control surface vendor). I view this more as the next level of the Presonus Faderport, Frontier AlphaTrack, or even the Frontier Tranzport. How much more useful would those types of devices be if there was a side mount "tablet" for flexible button arrangements? Far far in the future (like more than 6 months), I think they will "perfect" touchscreens with tactile feedback, so it is not ridiculous to have some sensory feedback, which is so important.
How about a wireless tablet, that allows one to have remote control of the DAW like the Tranzport does, but with an area that you can make tweaks to the levels, software instruments, etc... while doing you remote controlled punch-in-out?
How about a console mounted touchscreen that blows up to an advanced channel strip, where you can get a weighted RTA of the signal and simply draw an EQ curve across the screen... either of the EQ or what you want the end result to look like?
I think that some of the reactions that you have are correct, but such a product could be thought out to address these. There certainly is a utility, and although the professional studios are still going to use their ICON class surfaces, the home or prosumer user does tend to have much more compact setups where the ability to rely on single purpose control surfaces would give Logic an added perceived value to this segment of consumer - not something to be underestimated.
Of course, nobody has seen any evidence of Apple going this route, with most of the momentum caused by rumors and forums... a sort of self feeding effect, but I have little doubt that it will eventually be a reality. I was originally just noting what the hot topic of debate was with regards to the next Logic by those that participate in such pre-release chit chat. Maybe it won't be Logic 8, maybe it won't be Apple, but its coming...

It's cool bro, there will be some upgrade fee, you don't have to jump on, Logic 7 will be pretty cool for a ton of music making stuff.
All this new Final Cut Studio, Logic X, Leopard, CS3, AfterEffects8, etc. is to start to move people onto Universal Macintel. If you're happy with your PowerPC or Universal recent setups "previous" versions should be okay for what you want to do.
I would be recommending to move to the latest stuff for people that have not upgraded in about 1 year +. Or 2 years +. All itching to get on MacIntel, it should demolish the G5 machines in terms of performance.

Logic is certainly in need of a UI update. The core program hasn't changed a great deal since version 6 on OS 9. So I guess it needs 'X'ing' up a bit.
There better be good upgrade offers though, I've invested an awful lot of money in the software and have been ripped off at unfortunate times.

# 44 Re: Apple store change may hint at Logic overhaul
I'm kind of thinking that Apple meant to announce LP8 at Musikmesse and just kiboshed it at the end. There could be an infinite amount of reasons why but some more obvious ones could be
1. LP8 simply isn't ready
2. LP8 might reveal too many features that Apple wants disclose at a later date.
3. LP8 might better be announced with the other Pro apps at NAB
4. There is no LP8
Judging from the relatively small updates from 6 to 7.x I've got to think that Logic Pro as we know it is going to change drastically. My guess is that Apple/Emagic have worked on a nextgen replacement. I wouldn't be surprised if it came to light that the team working on Logic 6.x and 7.x was relatively small and that the bulk of Emagic programmers have been deconstructing the code and building a whole new application.
It's clear to me that Apple views audio as important. They know Avid has a gem in Digidesign. They probably also knew that Logics current codebase wasn't going to get them parity with Pro Tools.
Apple has been really silent regarding upgrades to Core Audio/Video/Image for Leopard. They do have a blurb about a rewritten FW Audio driver and networking but they conspicuously ignore talking about Core Audio and I know Apple hasn't sat on their thumbs for 2 years with CA.
I may be a fool but I think that whatever is coming is literally a new application and Apple can continue to call it Logic or they may rebrand it. I think that attempts to preserve the UI that "works" for Logic users will be made but I believe that Apple will change the UI so significantly that Logic users will be startled yet once they use the features they will realize that Apple and Emagic have made the right decisions.
Why do I feel this way? It is because Emagic as a seperate company could not have survived doing the same thing. One of the benefits of being owned by Apple is that the programming team can be bifurcated and resource assigned to maintaining the current codebase why the second team takes the lead for the nextgen project.
Let is not forget that Apple has such veterans on staff as Doug Wyatt from Opcode fame and Chris Moolios from ACID fame in addition to other fine programmers. The sense that I'm getting is that Apple is taking advantage of their growth to really propel their Pro apps forward. They've already put Shake on ice and next year we'll see what they have with Phenomenon. Clearly Apple is not afraid to deconstruct and rebuild the most complex applications they've ever owned.
The Big Bang happens in just over two weeks. I assure you Avid and Adobe are eagerly waiting to see how hard they will have to compete for seats. Logic Pro is a vital part of this equation. I expect HUGE things to come from the next update.

Tantalising points indeed. Very insightful. :smokey: ...Your list missed out on no.5 perhaps: Integration with Leopard 10.5 and "hidden/ bonus/ extra supermagickal" features.
Apple's pro strategy has been to "move up the value chain" from fairly commodity market scene of web and print design (no offense to such designers themselves) -- to video, film, effects, pro audio, these all require a bigger investment. If Avid is at a US$100k mark (roughly), then Apple seeks to carve out a "more fluid way of working", "seamless", "nimble", "true creativity unleased without big gear expenditure" etc. etc. with their Final Cut Studio 6 and Logic8 -- slicing off the lower-range US$20-30k chunk of the market, from under Avid, etc. Again, total rough figures just to show a comparison. I suppose if Avid is at a "investment in hardware/software" index of 10, Apple would look to enter at the 2-5 range, with the index of 1.5 and below being enthusiast/ amateur.
With CS3 in full flight by August 2007 (After Effects 8 a bit more waiting to do), Apple is going to come out guns blazing over the next several months with their pro stuff more seamlessly integrated into Leopard.
In terms of software development, the "bifurcating" sounds very plausible - a "maintenance" arm, and then the "Leopard" arm going ahead.
The Apple Pro hardware/software scene including CS3 will be looking very tasty by end of 2007.
iPods, cosumer stuff, redesigned iMacs, mmm...
