Connecting to SMB shares on a PC gives "error -36" ?

When I try to connect to my Windows 2000 PC's shared items from my PowerBook via SMB, I get error -36. Any idea what's wrong?

look for a similar title in the OSX area. there's a lengthy discussion there on some possible problems, as well as workarounds.
