Boot up problems

This may turn out to be one for the Geniuses. Ok I was using OS X and my dad wanted me to DL some stuff for him. So to get the internet to work I had to restart. I did so from the start up disk control panel (was gonna boot into OS 9 without thinking) but I left it set to X. After I do the comp shuts down and doesn't start up. I figure whatever and boot it up again. Now it sits with a pic of a disk and a blinking question mark. I held down option and tried to switch to OS 9. No go. Boot of a CD? No go. Says there's an unimplimented trap. So after a few min of blinking it just shuts itself off.
CAN ANYONE HELP ME!!! PLEASE!!!! This is my dads iBook and he won't be happy if something goes bad...
