Laid Off... Anyone else?

I'm sure there are others out there who've had the misfortune of being laid off. The bay area is disaster area wrt the job market.

So, are you unemployed and want to share in the misery?

Or perhaps you have tips or job leads for fellow mac heads...

One thing's for sure: this sucks!

Good luck.

I'll be unemployed in t minus 4.5 hours. But I chose to quit and my company is actually expanding and hiring new people. I just hate this job and I'm glad to be going.

FREEDOM!

I know that I haven't a clue what you have gone through to make you do this but I think it's a little foolish. If they are a strong and healthy company...stick with it.

Finding another job may be more difficult than you think now adays. Best of luck...really.

I have been laid-off since July. Two weeks after my vacation in London. I don't really see myself working...or flying for that matter in the near future. I'm collecting unemployment and that'll last until July of next year.

In my area of experience (web and graphic design) there has been nothing for over four months. I mean that I have had one interview in this whole time of sending, faxing and emailing resumes.

I hope that something will turn up soon. I'll relocate if I have to if nothing comes around by next year. This was nice for a while ('til about September 11th), but now I'm going nuts...

I'm going back to school so I'm not too worried about finding a job right now. But I'm lucky enough not to really have to worry. I'm forced to turn down job offers so I'm not too worried about moving on. Besides, I enjoy seeing new parts of the country so this gives me a chance to try out a whole new company and location.

Halfly right.

No full time job....given the market situation it's normal. Even a Starbucks job....there are HUNDREDS of applicants  .... many of them even have University degree!

All my income I have now are from my freelance works.

I have built over 18 sites in the last few months  but they didn't pay too well :(

Currently in talk with couple of "big" projects (finally relate to what I really love to do) but they won't be materalized until January or February...they may get fu*ked up in the last minute...so I am keeping my figers crossed...

I too will go back to school on January.....learning more advanced stuff on digital effects...but those courses are f*cking expensive

I've been trying the last few months to find decent work in the corporate sector (until the market settles down a bit and things return to normal) but the job market here has been dog crap since August more or less. Wasn't great before that either, but it's gone from bad to worse. :(

The freelance stuff isn't cutting it for me, but I don't have much choice at this point. The only people still getting hired are programmers and engineers and MBA's as far as I can tell.

Sucks.

I can't even manage a crappy hourly job.

Sad thing is, I have a resume a mile long and glowing references.

Bah.

Maybe I'm too qualified to be a BestBuy / CVS / FYE drone.

Even the ****ing A&P wouldn't give me a callback.

Mofos.

Yeah, what ever happened to the good old days...

My Dad did that in 1937...drove all the way from St. Louis to Philly...walked into the office of the CEO and said; "You need me, I want to work here and I want a partnership...". And the CEO said; "YER HIRED!" My father worked his tail off, but he became the vice president and partner of the company.

Jeez, today you need to send a resume, cover letter, past salary history, "brief description of your life " essay, visa, blood test, drug screening, body cavity search, first born daughter before you even get an interview with some over qualified, over paid "human resources" lacky...arrrgh.

God bless America...home of the brave and land of the unemployed and uninformed...

And that's just for the local McDonalds. If you want to work for a large company in an important sounding job you need an FBI background check.

Got pretty far on the java version. The Obj C version was a build behind.

I'm not laid off, but I work at a company that just did layoffs last week (five people out of 45) for the first time in our history. I was in the management group that had the unpleasant task of picking those individuals and carrying out the "de-hires." Ugh. I feel like Dilbert's pointy haired boss.

One of the guys who got the axe was a buddy with whom I go to lunch all the time. He keeps emailing me asking "What can I do to talk them out of it?" and unfortunately all I can tell him is "Nothing. Just start looking for another job." At least he got a month's notice -- the other four were out on the street the day they found out.

Sucks all the way around, especially for those of you in high tech.

It is interesting to note that most all of the layoffs are the indians. I have always wondered what happens when you run out of indians and management has to do their own work or lay themselves off. :D

When companies are doing layoffs, they normally concentrate on new employees who aren't indispensible. Companies normally want to spare their most valuable employees, and that usually includes the people in whom the company has invested the most.

I know of many, many examples where middle-managers (and even upper-middle managers) have been laid-off. It happened to my dad, even, at a very large company.

And upper-managers and officers regularly lose their jobs (but we call this a "board resolution" and not a "layoff")

Of course, people deciding on layoffs normally don't lay themselves off. Kind of makes sense, don't you think? Normally people want to stay employed, and will swing the axe at the OTHER guy's neck.

Ergo...Human Resources...they (and the CEO) always will have a job.
