New iPod and Music Service tomorrrow

GREAT! But what about us poor non iPod souls. I want to be able to download too!!!

Does this imply a new iTunes? Or will the "Shop for iTunes Products" menu item just go elsewhere??

My feeling is Apple doesn't have any announcements planned for the next few days. We're going to war with Iraq. Nobody's gonna care about a new music service. Maybe next week.

I'm gonna agree with this one. Tommorrow may be their last chance for a long while.

The inspectors haven't been ordered out yet, so the war can't begin tomorrow, but it will soon.

Unless Apple intends to wait another month, tomorrow seems to make sense.

Of course, I could be wrong... :D

Ok guys. Let's keep the talk of war to a minimum here in FH. Remember that if Apple has been planning to release the iPods tomorrow, world affairs will most likely not interrupt their plans, especially when it will cost them sales.

To clarify about where the thread goes; Right now, it's being speculated that the new iPod will be introduced tomorrow, perhaps alongside this new music service. Therefore, the thread stays here in Future Hardware. When the service and iPod are introduced, it goes to Digital Hub.

Will we see new iPods tomorrow? Who knows. I've seen people speculating about this since early February, so nothing will surprise me at this point. ;)

I disagree.

I think Apple would postpone an announcement for a few days or a week due to the Iraq situation. They do usually (always?) wait until a Tuesday to announce, afterall. Surely not everything they make just happens to be ready to go on a Tuesday. If they're willing to schedule their announcements to come on Tuesdays, they obviously don't take a "whenever we're ready" approach. The question is will they take the huge news about war with Iraq as competition with their own news. Hmmm... that, I'll concede, is a matter of opinion, but it's certainly a possibility. My opinion is that they definitely would take that into account.

I highly doubt we will see new iPods this week, next week, or the week after that. If we do, the music service (http://www.loudeye.com/digitalmedia/solutions/musicvidsamp/top10musicsamples.asp) will still be announced separately in April.

Starting April 8th, the chances for iPods/music service increase significantly over the next three weeks.

So I guess we should definatly be waiting until April for the long awaited iPod update. That sounds logical that when they release the music service, they will also release new iPods specifically designed to work seamlessly with it.

BTW: Does anyone have an idea at the specs for the up-comming iPods? Will there be a price drop on current models to make room for larger GB models later on? Will it have a color screen with QuickTime playback? Should we just wait and see?

Okay, RosettaStoned, I see where you're going with the whole LoudEye thing. I'm wondering if you've got an inside track, or if it's just a guess. If it's a guess it's probably a good one. Loudeye was the company that Napster used to 'fingerprint' MP3s when it was trying to go commercial a few years ago. Apple and Loudeye have worked together before, and Loudeye currently works closely with some big labels, including Virgin and Sony.

Oh, and this month Loudeye announced a new Chairman of the Board; Anthony J. Bay. If that name sounds familiar it's because he worked at Apple back in the 80s.

Chances for the new iPods will greatly increase for the 3 weeks after April 8th when the Music Service is announced.

I am looking forward to see what happens with iTunes and the music service that Apple will do... they will have a revolutionary way to do it, you know?

I have this friend that WANTS to get an iPod, but I keep on telling him wait because I know he will waste his money if he buys it know and a new one comes out very soon. Also, the 5GB's are out of stock...those are the ones everyone loves!

DHagan4755: I hope you're as right about all those hardware announcements as you were about the date. Using pure Apple logic, however, Bioflavonoid's prediction makes more sense: iBooks and eMacs introduced this Tuesday (i.e. tomorrow, April 22) and music service + iPods introduced Monday, April 28.

I really wonder where the 15-inch Aluminum PowerBook G4 fits into the equation. My hunch is that it doesn't. In other words, we won't see the new 15-inch PowerBook until later, maybe even WWDC in June.

I've read several mentions in the press of how the new music service is tied to the iPod. I'm wondering if its possible that the new iPod can connect to Apple and allow you to listen to samples and purchase songs without the need for a computer? Wouldn't this be a good way to sell the service to non-Mac users?

I was expecting this Apple special event to be held either in Town Hall on the Apple Campus or at the nearby Flint Center.
Does anyone know where it's being held? The Moscone Center in S.F. seems too big for such a "small" event.

Maybe, but I would expect an iTunes for Windows would deliberately lag the Mac version in features. The whole purpose of the iApps is to push people to buy Macs, and Apple would be very careful about any approach that might diminish their effectiveness in that role.
