That size of a monitor would be like a TV and I would love to have one :D

What would be nice is if you could use it as a TV,
With these ins and outs
S-video
Compent
Compset
Coax
ADC
Digital audio (Maybe this thing will have speakers)
and DVI javascript:%20x()

That would be quite a display, even the highest quality 1080p HDTV signal would have to be scaled up quite a bit to fill it out. I can imagine it would require as an absolute minimum the fastest video boards currentlt on the market and at least 128MB of RAM to move things around at a decent pace.

My guess is Apple would release it at $3999 (or was it $3499), like initial release of the 22 and 23 inchers.

Well just something I found via google...

"With a high resolution of 1280x768 and wide aspect ratio, the NEC LCD3000 renders precise text, images and video for clear viewing of applications such as presentations, charts, advertisements and pricing."

"The NEC LCD3000 will be available in Q4 '02, backed by a one-year limited warranty including backlight, at an*Estimated Street Price (ESP) of $4,299. Technical support is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling 800.632.4662."

This was from an NEC press release from last year LINK.

An NEC 30" LCD widescreen @ 1280x768 with a street price of $4,299.00... I wonder how much more it would cost to develop a 30" 2400x1500 display? Not cheap I'm sure...

So my 15" PowerBook does 1280x854. What would be the point of having a display that is twice as big with less pixels than my PowerBook? Isn't the point have having a big display to gain more desktop space (not lose it)?

It doesn't make much sense, buy maybe someone could enlighten me as to why this would be a good thing. ;)

Well the NEC PR states the applications would be used for such things a 'point of sale displays' etc... While I can't very well see McDonnalds doing away with plastic menus above the registers and putting in $4000+ 30" LCD displays I guess those units do have some market...

This kind of thing is huge in Asia. All sorts of stores use large flat panels to promote goods or provide information. Even the 7-11 convenience stores in Japan have 15 inch LCDs on the back sides of the cash registers so they can play advertisements to you while you wait to pay for your merchandise.

Funny that you say that, I saw exactly that the other day at McD's. There were people standing all around (kids too sorry) when I said "Holy Sh*t" The burgers were twirling from one side of the menu to the other chased by fries. It was un-fricken-believable. I don't think the resolution was that great because it looked grainey at 15 feet, but very cool nonetheless. I wasn't even hungry, but the magic screen talked me in to supersizing.

This is in the Phoenix, AZ area.

1280x768 is pretty damn close to 720p HDTV (1280x720). Plus like other posters have said, it probably is not meant for desktop use, but more for large displays in offices, shops, airports, etc.

Damn, I have the 23" and I could not imagine needing or getting the 30". It won't fit on most desks, talk about head cramps while surfing the net and looking left to right uip and down. Go sit in front of your tv, it's too big to be a monitor 1 foot in front of your face when it's that big.

wouldn't it be nice to have 5 browser windows open at the same time? ;)

Seriously...30" is too big for a display that will sit only 1 feet away from your eyes...

25" would be the biggest as a computer monitor...

30" is for presentation...

Nonsense! I've got 3200x1200 (dual 17" CRTs) and could use more space. Now for home use, yeah it would be a little excessive, but in the office I'll take as much as I can get!

About tthe price of a 30" Cinema: with the new deal with whatever manufacturer makes the Apple displays, the 23" dropped $1500. The pricing for a 30"er might not be as bad as we think; maybe $4000.

I think you'll see it more and more - certainly happenning in retail locations in the UK. Waterloo station has all the train times on multiple large LCD/plasma displays now, there are probably something like 60 of them on site.

I could absolutely do with that resolution, just scale the screen size down a bit. They could start by losing that hefty frame around the LCD, it looks ugly.

If they can produce a 5mm border on a powerbook, why not a desktop display?

Because you need to hold onto that frame to pick it up...unless you want to risk damaging your screen and getting it dirty with finger prints...

ok, it doesn't have to be 5mm, but it doesn't have to be 2 inches either... It doesn't seem to pose a problem for other display manufaturers.

Imagine if you could Hack into NASA and track the shuttle on your 30 inch cinema display mounted on your wall :D

If Apple is to release a monitor this size, it might be a part of a new line of TVs for home use and/or business persentations. This way, a portible or a PM could hook up to the display and become a DVD player, presentation hub with Keynote, or a way to do your work on the comfort of your couch that is better than WebTV. Imagine having your PM downstars and then it broadcasts the DVD you placed in it through Airport to your Apple Branded TV upstairs. I would buy one in a second :)

You both miss the point. There is no such thing as too big. The point is you won't need to be one foot away from it to see it. I'd have a wall-sized monitor if I could get one, and get back 6 feet.

Yeah. Even if I didn't gain much real estate after I factored in the size that buttons on the screen would have to be, I would enjoy being able to focus my eyes @ 4 feet instead of the 1 foot that I am suffering through right now. My eye prescription drops -1 diopter every year this way. :(

I'd really like to see a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. This would provide native resolution for both 720p or 1080i/p by pixel tripling or doubling respectively.

A thirty inch screen would give a nice tight 150 ppi.

Mmmmmm...

# 38 Re: macwhispers - 30" cinema
I have two 21" monitors and I would happily add a third. You can never have too much space considering all the menus graphics or video programs have, not to mention its nice to keep an email window open all day at work. So a 30" flat screen would be a welcome improvement over two boxy CRT's.

Not to mention, if apple offers some sort of Tivo type functionality as rumoured this could do dual duty as a monitor and a TV for the consumer user base. Think what flat screen TV's are selling for...?

You could have this monitor in your living room with a wireless connection to your laptop, you could show DVD's, iMovies, share iPhoto slideshows and play games console style. Not to mention plug in your camcorder / cable TV etc.

I think it would be worth a $4K pricetag. The TV is currently the huge missing component in the digital hub.

# 39 Re: macwhispers - 30" cinema
I find it hard to believe that Apple would just debut a 30" screen without another trick up their sleeve.

Think Different.

What would be the point of such a screen. Surely I could utilize if for Flash, Pro Tools, After Effects, Final Cut Pro, ...anything with a timeline.

However, expanding on the Digital Hub and digital lifestyle that Apple is helping us so easily to establish, would a 30" screen not be a great replacement for a television...?

Soon, a Mac will be at the heart of your entertainment center. The trend started a couple of years ago, but Apple will be the ones to bring it mainstream. HP beat Apple to the punch with their Multimedia PC but it is not an attractive package IMO.

I bought a 22" for $3,995 4 years ago. I will not say I am ready for the 30" quite yet, but would probably swing it sometime in the future.

It'd go great with one of those 6-11MP digital cameras too. :)
