What do you think the iMac replacement will look like?
My guess is a solid base with the HD and Optical drive to give the screen stability. Both mounted horizontally.
Given the intention to bring DVD burning to consumer machines I am not convinced that we will see slot loading drives.
My quess it's going to be a quick silver colour scheme to represent the high level of performance.

I've always thought (wished) it would have a base like the current iMac but shorter holding the mother board, etc., and rear positioned hatch to allow access to the RAM, vid card, and perhaps room for a second hard drive. Up front would be the LCD and below that the CD slot and speakers as in the current models.

I still like my idea from last winter/spring of a flat panel iMac that is similiar in design to the current LCD Studio Displays, with the "guts" housed in the back "kickstand" part (mounted vertically.

That's kind of a cool idea but how do you get teh CDs in and out without reaching around to the back?

Not sure if any of you have seen my flat panel iMac renderings. I showed these when we last thought a flat iMac would be announced, instead we got the "Quicksilver". So here they are. It's based on an iBook, but with no hinge for a display. Everything would be in one enclosure thus reducing the cost. Let me know what you think.

You reach around to the back :)
If it's wide enough, there's no problem. Either that, or put the optical drive into the display portion of the thing, where it's a bit closer?

I'd like to see seperate units for display and monitor. Yes, I know, it blows off the original intent of the iMac. Then again, the original scheme just doesn't seem to work anymore.
I'm picturing a microtower about the size of a uhh, 10" x 4"x 15"box. An optical drive, perhaps an available 5.25" bay as well. Room for upgradable graphics, HD, drives, CPU, etc. Then it would connect with a single wire to the diplay, like the cube.

I doubt Apple would do that. It's a pain to keep reaching in the back, especially to put in a CD or DVD or whatever.

A good idea and I've considered the microtower too, but the form factor I suggested above would allow both expandability and the iMac's all-in-one simplicity. The CRT is the biggest part of the iMac and once that is removed you have a lot of room.

Any derivative of the Studio Display or Cube industrial designs are fine by me. Better yet, they'll come up with something completely new.

Hey folks, I know that everyone wants to have this whole idea of this MicroTower or whatever the hell it is you think would be cool. However that completely DEFEATS the purpose behind the iMac. It was meant to be an all-in-one design, with complete ease of use and ease of setup in mind.
Why in the world would you want to take that away?? As far as I am concerned, I think that IF a LCD iMac comes out, it will look a whole lot like a Cinema Display. That would go well with the whole aspect of Apple and where it is heading. Also, I would think that the iMac2 will be G4 based because Steve wants the SuperDrive in the hands of consumers, not just pros.

OK, so I made something simple but it would work I think.

Like I said, its very simple, I didn't spend much time on it but I think it gets my idea through. Hopefully I'll add a side view later.
It has four legs so it should be stable. The optical drive is in an area that drops down from behind the screen, I think the clear plastics of Apple's monitors looks really nice and I didn't want to break it. Instead, the drive is in the, for lack of a better word, belly of the machine and only slightly recessed (less than an inch). It would take on the color and plastic styles of the iBook.
I'd have the power cord and all the ports on the right side much like they are now, easy to reach and yet still out of the way.
Also, with the design I don't think it would be hard to make it so the monitor "snapped" on to the rest of the machine so users could select their iMac monitor size and still ship it as an all-in-one from the factory. I don't see this happening but it is an idea.
So, for simple work what do you think?
