New LCDs for MWSF ?

This was posted on RAILhead design web site. What is your thoughts on the post, Copy below.

New Apple Displays
Weve all been wondering, and now the time is getting closer Apple is getting ready to release a new set of displays. As you all know, CRT monitors are going the way of the floppy drive since theyre so bulky, heavy, heat-generating, and power hungry. The new standard is LCD, and prices for this display technology is dropping on a daily basis, which is helping to make LCD the defacto standard.

As for Apple, you can now purchase three sizes: 15, 17 and 22 inch displays, and prices range from $600 to $1000 to $2500. Also, these current models match only the Graphite enclosure but not for long.

Heres what I know: the 15 inch display will be dissolved and the new low-end display will be the 17 inch model. The 22 inch display will remain the top-dog, and to fill-in the middle spot, Apple will introduce a 19 inch model. So, well have the full range: 17 inch, 19 inch, and 22 inch.

We will also be seeing a new body for these displays: Quicksilver. There are a few potential cases being looked at, from complete Quicksilver matching, to a design thats a little more androgenous to the Macs case design (so it will still match the Mac when the next body style comes out). But the current mind-set is to make displays that match the bodys and to change their exteriors accordingly and in relation to changes made in the Mac case style.

As for pricing, even though LCD is getting more and more affordable, things wont be too much different from what they are now: the 17 inch will come in around $500, the 19 inch around $900, and the 22 inch display will hold fast to the $2000-$2300 spot. Better, yes, but good mother Id love that 22 inch display!

When will we see these new monitors? Sooner than we think, from what Im hearing and we should be able to place our orders in the first quarter of 2002, if not before. Stay tuned, and Ill post more as I get more

Sounds like...
15" = iMac
17,19,22 for the Power Macs.

Sounds good, but I have a hard time believing that the 17" LCD is going to have it's price cut in half - from $1000 to $500. Seems like too much of a price drop for the Apple I know...

But man, a 19" LCD for $900? That would be sweet.

$500 US for 17" LCD? A little hard to swallow, but I want to believe! What's that in Canadian dollars eh? 'round $750 for petes sake. Lord tunderin', that's alot of beers dontcha think?

Sorry, too much "This hour has 22 minutes" for me.

I guess they want to move the 15" into the iMac...too bad they don't use the PB screen...

PB screen = much more expensive cuz it's gotta fit in such a thin enclosure... Look at the difference in thickness between the PB screen and the 15"..

The clear feet, the graphite Apple, the solid silver back. The only difference is the pinstripe on the monitor, which isn't present on the Computer. How could they make it more Quicksilver?

The Apple logo on the back is that dark gray graphite, not matching the silvery, non-graphite Apple logo on the sides of the new G4.

That's the first thing I said during the intro of the Quicksilver G4: "but the logos don't match!"

:D

Other than that though, the powdery silver casing, clear glass, gentle curves, etc. are all a good match.

They just need to change that logo on the back to a more silvery look and perhaps lose (or tone down) the pinstripes a bit.

I'm pretty certain new LCDs will be one of the announcements in January, and they'll have a couple of FireWire ports in them.

I'm not altogether so certain, but wouldn't be surprised if the new LCDs are designed to compliment not only the silvery Power Macs, but also a new silvery/glossy white iMac.

I'd also bet there'll be no changes to either 'Book, and that there'll be a 1GHz Power Mac, though I'm not even going to start arguing out whether it'll be a G4 or G5. :)

So no changes to the cinema display? I heard they were gonna do something to it, add an inch, or up the resolution or something new to it.

Can't wait for Jan

I just don't see how a body redesgin would be required, as the article suggests.

Im absolutly certain that I'm not sure what will happen the day after today. I think.

I will have confirmation tomorrow.

At first I didn't think that was such a big deal but then I realized Apple is with style and everything. It really is a big deal. Even if that's the only thing they change it would be kinda good.

Laptop LCDs are (and always have been) cheaper than desktop LCDs.

1) They're not as bright.
2) They aren't as good about viewable angles
3) They're thinner and flimsier

Apple needs to come up with some kind of universal monitor port for their laptops. Something that outputs RGB, DVI, ADC (sans power)and VGA through just one port. You select the appropriate dongle and hook the thing up to whatever display you have available. I want an iBook AND a studio display to plug into it!

Dongles are evil. Apple is a proud supporter of the all-ine-one ideal computer, like the iMac and like the iBook and like the TiBook and like every other AIO Mac out there. Dongles are extra things to keep track of.

Wow, I might be able to get a 17" LCD at $500. A little unbelievable for January, but I'll bite on my next Mac purchase, which will be the entry-level Power Mac G4.

# 17 Re: New LCDs for MWSF ?
Perhaps not a dongle then; just different cords. ADC is nice, but Apple needs to provide a cheap means of connection to their laptops.

# 18 Re: New LCDs for MWSF ?
wouldn't it be better to up the resolution of the current offerings by one step each?

15" 1280x1024
17" 1440x1080
19" 1600x1200 <-- I don't think so, but hey, just dreaming anyway.
22" 1920x1200
