How do i change the computer icon?

okay, this one's really been buggin for quite some time: how do i change the 'Computer' icon from that purple iMac to something relevant (like a PowerBook G3 for instance). I was expecting there to be something for this in SysPrefs or something...

any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanx!

i think www.xicons.com has something about how this is done. I would like OSX to detect the model in use and set the icon appropriately. The different color schemes have different sales numbers which apple system profiler can read, so why couldn't the OS take advantage of that to customize the Computer icon?

That would be pretty cool if the OS could do that. I don't see why it can't.

Go here

System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app

control click on the Finder.app and select "Show package contents"

Then go here

Contents/Resources/Computer.incs

There is your file.

1.Complicated way:
replace via terminal (unintuitive and fault provoking)
needs root access to the above mentioned Resource folder.
So I won't get into this.

2.Easy way:
boot into OS 9 and just drag the icon out and replace with new one using the exact same name. Reboot into X. Done.

The icon format has to be either universal or the X-type. I do use Iconographer for this purpose. My iBook appears as an iBook under "computer" since I changed that. (What a lame naming scheme btw.)

You can alter any icon this way. ;)

use the "classic" way of cut & paste the symbol in the information window.
(works in OS 10.1)
