Best Game for the mac-as far as written
Star Wars: Pod Racer has to be the best programmed mac game ever. It really amazed me how well this game runs on a mac.
It has relatively low system requirements and performs flawlessy. everything looks great, no bugs or anything, fantastic frame rates and just a great game. if you don't own it definitely get it.
There's nothing like being on a trip and being able to play Star Wars: Pod racer on your Powerbook's 15.2 inch megawide screen :)

There are many other games for the mac that do not have any problems and are quite fun to play. Myst, Starcraft, Escape Velocity, etc. Pod Racer has absolutely no storyline, so I would hardly call it a great game.

why must a game have a story-line to be a great game?
also it does have a storyline even if it sucks.
Myst is another great game. So is Riven, Myst 3 on the otherhand

Avara back when it was popular.
I had hours of fun with that game, and I still go to the hotline server.

Lords of the Realm II.
Boy, that game was fast. Windows opened and everything happened instantly, no waiting. Oh, btw, and this is on a 33MHz '040

Plus, it flies under Classic in OSX... very impressive indeed!
I'd rank Starcraft up there too, especially since the Carbon version has been released.
Now, does anyonw remember Bolo?? :D THAT was an awesome little game! I had the most fun way back as a freshman in high school playing that on the LAN in the Mac computer lab. I designed all these cool little maps too.

you're all forgetting one of the most addictive and sleepless night causing games ever.
Escape Velocity or its big brother EV: Overide
I couldn't count the number of hours I spent playing that game (I still do in fact).
Now, all there is to do is wait for the newest installment, NOVA.

Bolo ruled ;)
Also, Myth 1 ran great in oftware on my old 200mhz 6400. Oni runs pretty well too.
Bungie rules.
It actually surprised me that Oni ran almost as fast at 640/480 on my pismo as at 1024/768 on my 1.2ghz Athalon and GF3 (yes... i jumped ship, but I plan on buying another mac next). Bungie is good at mac coding, i dare even say better than at PC coding.

Ya, myth I ran well even on my powermac/60. Macsoft, not bungie, is porting myth3.

I think another great game is Giants, awesome graphics, good plot. It does have some bugs which they will deny, but oh well. I finished the game last week, and overall I give it a 8.5 out of 10.

2 words: Crystal Quest.
Booyah.
I'd give anything for a licensed copy of the original.

Yes, but I think that every one has to admit that the coding in it is pretty bad. I dont know about the mac version, but the PC version ran >40fps on high detail and looked rather like a really good UT engine game.
TO tell you the truth, I wasnt very impressed.

All game plot lines suck.
Screw that, get to the action.
Saying the game sucks because the story is weak is like saying Porn Movie X is better than Porn Movie Y because the scenes with dialogue were better.
:)

I think applenut's point is which games are best for the Mac. A tough choice since some games that run well kinda suck and vice versa. Never had the pleasure of playing Pod Racer, but my vote for all around best Mac games really goes to the Blizzard Team. Warcraft, Diablo and especially Starcraft all feel like they were built for the Mac and not just ported over. Easy installs, no features that were 'only available on the PC version,' they run like a dream (even on my old 7500), they offer Mac expansion pacs and they give you incredibly easy network play; both over Appletalk and the Internet. Plus these games are highly enjoyable.
Now if only they would release Starcraft II...

True, Blizzard hit more than a perfect 10 for Starcraft. Check out it's graphics, today they seem weak, and not anti-aliased. But nobody cares about that, including me. I play this game hour after hour. It's timeless. Also you have to keep Quake 3 in mind, the idea that Mac Users aren't left behind because of its universal pk3 files (mods) is a very good thing. I love playing Urban Terror (which is a mod) more than Quake itself. These days everybody is making games, but what they don't realize is people want something entertaining, not just fancy graphics. e.g. summoner.
I thought that game was neat, I got it, played it for about 5 minutes and dumped it. I think a game is all about what goes on in the first 10 minutes, and if you have seen the intro for Sumoner, it sucks. Graphism didn't even take the time to create a nice 3D introduction with nice graphics and all, like almost any other game these days, INCLUDING Starcraft. Unfortunately, they didn't, and it was lame as F^@#! And the installation? It was terrible, took about 20 minutes to install, oh and it's only Mac OS 9 compatible.
Then there is Red Faction which I will try out soon. I think it will suck like Summoner does. They think their GeoMod technology will make it top Quake 3? We will have to see. I don't think they will though. :)
