when you plug it in windows should allready see it attached and if it does not install it then just go and install it (r-click on my computer) go to propties > hardware > Device Manager > then just look for your ipod and install it

You have to use somebody else computer with Windows XP/2000 to reformat (or "Update") your iPod with software bundled with your iPod. You should enable disk mode on iPod when asked.
After that your iPod should be visible as removable hard drive on Windows ME - no special driver needed.
When you'll see iPod as a drive letter, you can try using software for managing music. I wouldn't suggest Ephpod since it seems to have problems with modern (4G) iPods. I think RealPlayer 10.5 is the best, Winamp with suitable plugin is also OK, but have no music shop.

Check the sticky ( http://www.ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6581) . You actually do not need 2k/XP to run updater. I am not sure that RealPlayer is the best, since it doesn't support smart play lists.

Stop pointing people to that outdated sticky, please. That info is useless for 4G iPods.
