Is the Altec Lansing iM2 compatible with the 40gb ^4G^ ipods?
this one:

seems pretty cheap (although ugly as sin). Does anyone know if it is compatible with the 40gb 4g (Fourth Generation) ipod? thanks.

Sorry, not 100% sure. But it does look like it connects through a headphone jack, because it implies its universal (MP3 and CC)
I don't blame you for wanting to, because thats really cheap.

Yeah, it works with all mp3 players because you can just use the headphone jack to connect it.
It's a great deal for $40, although don't expect it to be very loud or to fill a big room with sound.
It sounds like a pair of cheap PC speakers (which is to say pretty good, but not great).
People on Buy.com were complaining about the lack of bass, but I found the bass response to be rich and full (albeit not ground-shaking).

Questoin about those speakers-
Does an ipod even dock between the speakers?
Or does it just sit there, and fall out if touched?
and is that the same version as the white ipod inmotions?

I am also looking for portable speakers, but i dont want to get iPod specific ones because I want to be able to listen to my friends music also. I like how the IM4 look, I personally like teh look better than the rest of the portable's speakers, but no speakers without the dock charge teh iPod. They cost a reasonable $99, so I think its a good value.

Although the IM2 does not dock with an iPod, the performance of the IM2 and the Inmotion are exactly the same, according to Altec Lansing. The following is the entirety of the text in my exchange of e-mails with Altec Lansing Customer Support:
Dear Sir or Madam:
Can you tell me what the difference is (if any, and other than color) between the IM2 and the Inmotion for someone who owns a jukebox MP3 player that is not an iPod?
--------------------------
The IM2 was designed for customers who have ipods with no docking capability. You just use the stereo cable and plug it into the headphone jack.
Altec Lansing
--------------------------
So the speaker performance, wattage, etc. are the same in both models?
--------------------------
yes

So, given that you can get the IM2s for $40 bucks, the question is whether the extra $60-$110 bucks for docking/charging? capability and color-compatibility is worth it to get the Inmotions instead of the IM2s.

There's another model that's rechargeable - this one uses 4AA batteries - and if you use rechargeable AAs they only last about an hour and a half on a charge - not very good.
However, for $40 you really cannot go wrong if you don't plan to use them a lot.
And you can plug in an AC adapter to run it off of wall power if you just want a decent set of speakers in another room.
