Lets raise MONEY for SMARTPLAYLISTS!
SmartPlaylists is the one feature that is missing from EphPod.
Implementing this will make it a killer app. I urge the developer to put his effort into this so EphPod can move on the the next level.
I am myself donating MONEY for that goal and I urge other people to do so.
Come on, 5 bucks is less than what you pay for a pizza that lasts 15 min. Such small contribution from each happy user will make a difference!
If there are technical difficulties to overcome maybe the developer would consider going OPEN SOURCE and getting the help of the community. It really doesn't matter that it uses proprietary software since those can be distributed as libraries under a different license. Open source would speed development and take the burden out of Joe (?).

To be honest I never used EphPod. Apple released iTunes for Windows about the time I got my first, 1G iPod. Not that I wish to dis. the People behind EphPod, but whats it good for when there's iTunes with it's creamy smooth 'Smart Playlists' Built-in!
Now I'm aware that EphPod can do things that iTunes can't. (i.e. Contacts), I find Windows Explorer to sufice for that porpuse though. As for News I use 'Goolge Get' (when the mood takes me).
The point is?!?! Why aren't you useing iTunes, for 'Smart Playlists'?
# 2 Re: Lets raise MONEY for SMARTPLAYLISTS!
Ephpod is the only software I have tried that allows me to select a directory and sync my iPod to the contents of that folder (and subfolders) with no hassle.
iTunes requires me to import the folder to a library (which I have no use for) and then sync to the library, when I remove something from the library or directory it removes it from my iPod.
How I work:
1 - I randomly rip CDs to a music folder.
2 - I sync my iPod once in a while to this music folder with ephpod.
3 - Once I have enough music in that folder (or I am sick of it) I
burn it to a CD
4 - Repeat
In this process I want the music that has been in the music folder at some point in time to be stored in my iPod, always adding more, never removing. Ephpod does this perfectly, but it screws up my Smartlists.
I don't want "music libraries" or "media managers", I already have a built-in multi-purpose filesystem in my computer that handles all "file management". Why add another layer?
In fact, I only need the 'sync and quit' option of Ephpod.
I am an open minded person and if anyone can suggest an alternative software that does the above I'll be more than happy to switch. I just haven't seen it.

RTFM!

Hey if your happy with ephpod thats cool, but you don't have to do autosync with iTunes. You can set it for manual update which would allow you to delte songs at will from iTunes and your hard drive and keep them on the iPod and then can make smartplaylists directly on your iPod.
The only thing that would be missing is syncing via directory, but with appropriate ID3 tags playlists could make up for this.
It probably still isn't going to work for you the exact way you want, but using manual sync gives a different level of control to your music and maintains access to smartplaylists.

Yes, but I still have to add the songs to the iTunes library and I have to actually know the knew stuff from what is not new, etc. Too much work.
I want direct and simple folder synchronization.

I may have misunderstood parts of your message. To me it sounds like you delete stuff from your hard drive so there should be minimal old to new ratio. Once into iTunes you could make a very simple playlist in the iTunes library that would grab songs recently imported and then select the playlist and drag those songs to an iPod in manual mode. The managing really isn't that much extra work, but that is just my opinion.
For the most simpliest synchronization, though, the autosync is really the way to go. If you have plenty of room on your internal or an external drive all you have to do is sync the iTunes library a simple connect, wait a moment, disconnect and you are done. No muss no fuss.
I likely won't change your mind though, and I won't attempt too hard. I just like to put forward ways of thinking some people havn't thought of. I learn a thing or two along the way as well from time to time.
I also don't look at a media player such as iTunes as an extra layer on top of a file system I look at it as a "Window" to the file system. iTunes has such powerful browse and sorting functions that I find so much easier to use than looking in a directory. If I need to get to the actual file for some reason I can select the song in iTunes and either right click or give a key command for it to open a separate window that shows me the song file.
This too is just my opinon. You will find many organization schemes on here though if you search the forums or wait for discussions to come up. You will eventually find what is right for you.
Cheers,
Stu

Don't get me wrong, I highly appreciatte your input. I have no commitment to any software except for the services it provides me (and the time it saves me).
The problem is exactly the one you mentioned. At any given time I have no clue what is new or old. I would imagine I could constantly drag the whole file to iTunes to update the library and it would handle the duplicates by what should I do that? Why can't it just synchronize with a directory? Hum...maybe if that directory is inside the iTunes music folder...I never tried that.
I agree with you that the iTunes search and etc are good things. I just don't use them. And if it synchronizes with a folder, even better, I could search without having to add it to the library.
Another problem I have with iTunes is that when I delete a songs from a folder they are not removed from the library, and then I have to delete them manually. Another EXTRA step.
Se we are talking her about 2 extra steps for a search/sort service I don't use.
For me the solution is either ephopod implements smartlists or iTunes implements folder sync.
Btw, there are plenty of postings in the iTunes discussions about this same issue. For example,

BTW, you may want to know that iTunes 4.7 has duplicate track locating feature.
I have some what similar situation. I have backed up some of the entire directories in to CDs to free up disk space. I have transfered the tracks to the iPod by inserting the CD and dragging and dropping the directories in to iTunes. After doing this I take the CD out and the next time when I start iTunes there will be a small exclamation mark next to the tracks that were imported from the CD because iTunes cannot see those files anymore in my PC hard disk. So I know exactly which tracks are in my iPod only and which are in both iPod and PC hard disk.
I haven't done this, but my thinking is that you can just sort the tracks using the column that shows this exclamation mark and then delete them from iTunes if needed. At the next sync they should be deleted from iPod also.
The down side of moving your tracks in to CDs is that you cannot update the tag information anymore. Apart from that this works fine for me. In summary I have more tracks in my iPod that in my PC hard disk.

I'm a little late on this thread, I know. But I'm on exactly the same level as BrainStructures. iTunes does more than I need, and what I need it does poorly.
All I need is to open a program like EphPod, press "Sync" and when close it when it's done.
EphPod is good enough for now, but an app that supports smartplaylists would be great. Oh, and if it could keep a copy of the star ratings I apply to songs, that would be nice too.
