I tunes reads song titles wrong (for my purposes)
Well, how do I make Itunes and Ipod group my music by the file name I give it rather than whatever metadata it seems to be using. For example if I download a song as track7.mp3, and then rename it to The Band - The Song.mp3, Itunes reads it as track7. Thus all my playlists are either incomplete, or I'll have like 3 different playlists for one band.

You would need to go into iTunes, highlight the track/s, right click it, and get info. Or on a Mac simply highlight and click Cmd-i. Now you can rename them as you wish, with your track name, artist, album, etc.
Happy tagging :)

Oh man, you mean I actually have to rename them all manually? Theres no setting to just have them read as they are? I have like 7000 mp3s, its not realy a convenient alternative.
Thanks for the reply though.

Bah, alot of the songs are greyed out when i try it this way anyway. Booo.

iTunes and the iPod read the ID3 tags within the mp3 file. If it's still saying "track7" as the song title then you can check the ID3 tag to see if the song title is listed as "track7".
You can rename file tags using an mp3 tag editor like MP3 Tag Studio, available for free here:
http://www.magnusbrading.com/mp3ts/
Select the "Auto Rename Tags from File Names" tab and set it to the format that you use to name your files. Works like a charm.

Man, thanks loads. If only you posted this 24 hours earlier :(. At any rate, I've redone all my tags. This is a great program.

Yeah, I really like it, and it has a lot more options for renaming tags AND files on your hard drive than iTunes does.
Anyway, it's good to make sure your ID3 tags are filled in, because the iPod uses them to make its database. Having complete tags lets you sort by genre, play songs by a particular composer, etc. Very convenient.
The only downside to the ID3 tag database for music is that you can't just drag music files into your iPod (at least not without a 3rd party application like XPlay2 - which is what I use - or Ephpod, etc.).
Still, it's not hard to get music onto the iPod, and once it's there it's easier to navigate if all of your tags are correct.
Also, with the ID3v2.x you can make up your own genres. I have genres like "Garage Bands" or "Brit Pop" on mine, as well as "Funk With Some Serious Stink On It" and "Chambre Music".

Yeah, it took a LONG time, but with the help of that program everything is finally somewhat in order. Thanks again.
# 8 Re: I tunes reads song titles wrong (for my purposes)
Is there anyway to bulk edit the ID3 tags of files directly (make the title = filename) on the iPod or do I have to copy them back across to my hard drive first then do it ?
Out of curiosity do most people browse songs by title or artist on their iPod or do you group things by static playlists ?
# 9 Re: I tunes reads song titles wrong (for my purposes)
I almost always surf by artist because neither the song titles nor album titles scroll, so searching by the first few characters of a song is pointless, and even worse for albums where I have a dozen or so albums all reading "The Very Best Of " and then I can't see the rest of the album title.
I almost returned my iPod for that reason. Whoever designed the UI must have fallen asleep halfway through. It's really unuseable unless you browse by artist.
