iSee-20 - Short Review (pics)

My first post here guys, just wanted to do a short review of the iSee-20 I recieved today for my 4G, since I didn't see any existing reviews. I'm sure everyone is anxious to know what it looks like outside of the contour website.

It's a fairly simple design and as of right now it looks to be quite a nice case. Fulfills everything I need it to do and doesn't hide the beauty of the iPod. The plastic is actually a lot thicker than I expected, but I can live with this as it'll probably protect the iPod better. Bulk and weight isn't significantly increased, but if you liked the ultra-slim profile of the 4G 20GB, you'll have to find a way to live with this. I would say it makes it about as thick as a 4G 40GB.

Fit and finish are fantastic, but the plastic will probably get scratched as time goes on. The bottom door for the firewire port works well and open and closes with a *snap*. The plastic element at the bottom that prevents the iPod from falling out snaps onto the sides of the plastic using tabs. It seems pretty secure. The top is slightly smaller than the iPod as to prevent the iPod from falling out. The iPod doesn't seem to fit exactly snug when it's first put in without the bottom latch, but as soon as it's installed it's completely snug and doesn't move at all.

The belt clip works well and is easy to use (snaps onto the side).

Overall I'm impressed with the functionality and simplicity of this case. And one cannot argue given the price, cheaper than most silicone skins, and it doesn't hide the iPod in any way. How does it feel in your hand? Before the iPod felt very fragile and thin...I set it down very lightly and always grasped it like it was going to drop. Now, I can hold it any way I want not fearing damage, scratches, or fingerprints. The added thickness with the case on makes it feel very "brick-like" and invincible.

This one is definitely a keeper.

Nice, mine should be here tomorrow according to FedEx tracking, i can't wait!

I don't plan on using the belt clip much, but, how does it work since it is horizontal...do you leave the iPod horizontal on your waist?

MBHockey: You probably put it through a belt loop (on your pants) either in front of the belt or use it without a belt. Or I suppose your way probably works. I personally dont need the belt clip and think it makes the whole setup ugly, but it is very well designed and secure. It snaps onto two thin notches (holes) on the side of the case.

# 6 Re: iSee-20 - Short Review (pics)
I can't tell but it looks like the top of the iPod is exposed, right?

The opening is small enough to keep the iPod in the case but otherwise completely open on top to allow access to the headphone jack and hold switch, right?

# 7 Re: iSee-20 - Short Review (pics)
Do you think the iSee could scratch the iPod while inside the case? I heard this was a problem with the older iSees and with the Speck Flipstands.

I use an iSkin now but I think it's too sticky for my pocket. I had the Showcase for a while but took it back because I realized it was still too bulky even though I liked it alot.

My latest plan is to wrap my iPod in one of these (http://www.powerdesignusa.com/products/ipod/bodymask.php) and drop it into an iSee to prevent plastic on plastic scratching from any grit that might get inside. I like that the iSee is a hard case compared to the iSkin.

It should fit right or do you think inside scratching is not really a problem?

# 8 Re: iSee-20 - Short Review (pics)
Personally, as of the 4 hours I've owned it, I don't think it's going to scratch the body. It fits very snugly inside and the only way it could scratch is if you carelessly put it in or take it out...or do it very often.

I did hear about the early iSee's (1/2G models) scratching the iPods but I'm pretty sure Contour has fixed this.

# 9 Re: iSee-20 - Short Review (pics)
Thanks for the answer.

I had one of the 4G 40GB with the audio problem so I got a replacement from Apple. In the time that I had the first iPod, I had the iPod in the iSkin and the Click Wheel still got scratched because it wasn't covered, even though I only used to put it in and out of my pocket.

I was sure that I wanted to use something over the Click Wheel so I figured why not just BodyMask it and drop it in the iSee? If you think it's not really an issue, I might just get something only for the Click Wheel.

# 10 Re: iSee-20 - Short Review (pics)
I was thinking about getting an iPoDonut but I decided I like the grey and prefer to keep my click wheel unprotected. Scratches won't be that noticeable and the case makes the wheel sit pretty deep so that offers some protection.

# 11 Re: iSee-20 - Short Review (pics)
I just use a clear PDA screen cover cut in a square and stuck over the Click Wheel in the iSkin right now. I didn't want any other color other than gray either. All I had in my pockets were a cell phone and a piece of paper with writing on it. I think some ink on the paper left a slight mark on the wheel and the phone might have scratched it. Thanks for your comments.

Hm... I was really excited about the iSee-40 that's coming out in a week or so, but now it seems like I might be better off with an iSkin or an XtremeMac Deluxe... An iPod with an iSee-40 seems like it will be quite fat.

What do you guys think?

Judging from the pictures I have seen of the iSee and the fact that I have an iSkin, I don't think the iSee is much thicker. The iSkin is 2 mm thick and from the last pic, I don't think the plastic of the iSee is much thicker than that. I guarantee the belt clip of the iSkin juts out more than for the iSee.

I've got to say that I had the same dilemma. Ultimately I went with the iSee for the following reasons: it's cheaper, and it is compatible with iTrip (since i use the iPod all the time in the car and i don't have a tape deck for a tape adapter, this was ultimately the main deciding factor).

just want to say that I am not disappointed. It doesn't bulk the iPod up too much, but at the same time it's big enough to give me a sense of security about its ability to protect.

also, I placed my order around 10:00 pm on Sunday night and it arrived today (Wednesday) around 2:00pm, a full day earlier than the fedex online tracking promised.

all in all i can't say that i'm disappointed.

Does the iSee get easily scratched? If it does, does it still look good when the case has scratches?

I am also debating whether I should get the showcase or the iSee. I am worried that the iSee will no longer look good when there are scratches all over it.

I must say that looks much nicer than the DLO Jam Jacket I got from Best Buy the other day. Would somebody please report how many scratches it picks up? If it doesn't get many scratches, I might have to convince my parents to drag me in to the Barton Creek Apple Store so I can get one of them and then get a refund on my Jam Jacket.

# 46 Re: iSee-20 - Short Review (pics)
I don't like how the bottom plastic element is that cloudy gray color. If it were clear like the rest of the case, I'd like it more. I used the original iSee with my 2G, and while it did scratch my iPod to a certain extent, I liked how you could hardly tell that there was a case on (the 2G 20GB was certainly bulky enough already. It hardly affected that). It's easier to see that there's a case on your iPod with you use this, but most of the design elements have been improved. Worth consideration if I ever buy a 4G.

To answer the questions:

Yes, it does scratch, but not very easily. It doesn't bother me at all because I know it's working and it's very rugged. Better the case than the iPod.

The transclucent plastic bottom doesn't take away from the look of the case, and it's probably the only way they could've designed it. Clear hard plastic would easily break through use of the port cover...this is a slightly soft plastic.

No, I don't think you can use it with a dock.

# 51 Re: iSee-20 - Short Review (pics)
I just have some more questions if you don't mind:
how is the drop protection? If you drop it, will it crack the case open? Does it offer the same protection (or better) than the Showcase? Does the scratches look noticeable and do they still look good with the scratches?

Thanks.
heymikey at 2007-11-15 16:29:15 >
# 52 Re: iSee-20 - Short Review (pics)
i dont see any scratches, i have a showcase also, and i feel that would be better protecting if i dropped my iPod...it has rubber edges and is thicker. I guess the plastic could crack, but that's better than the iPod itself. Mine is looking good though.

# 53 Re: iSee-20 - Short Review (pics)
The plastic can probably crack...but it would have to be a severe drop or a numerous amount of drops to finally budge it to do so. This is a great product (From what i've read) and have been convinced to get this case out of the rest.

Matt Foley, here is your answer: you can't use the dock with the iSee. if you take off the bottom to put the iPod in the dock, then the iSee will slide up on it to a point where you can only access the top 2/3 or so of the click wheel, making the play/pause inaccessible and select almost inaccessible.

The 4G 40GB iSee case will probably physically fit the 3G 15GB (loosely), but there's only a hole for the click wheel, so you'll lose access to the 4 buttons.

Got mine in the mail direct from Contour earlier this week...it included the 'thin film' liner to keep the iPod from getting scratched. It's a bit fussy to get the film to not bunch up around the 'pod when being inserted - I ended up using a dock cable as a handle of sorts to get a good grip and secure the film. My U2 'pod had been living in an iSkin 'clear' slilcone case, but now one can see the black and red perfectly. I have an old old Contour-like case on my 2nd gen iPod...the case is scratched, dinged and looks a bit rough in general, but the 'pod is still nearly perfect.

Minor gripe - no rubber footies on the new case to keep the thing from sliding off the airline seatback tables :(

I got my i-see about a month and a half ago, and i love it. My only problem is that when i got it, the inside of the case was pretty scratched up. Its really a great case, but i thought that was kinda a bummer

Hey people i really want to buy the Isee 20 but im unsure of where to buy it from. Ok i am in Australia and i was going to get it online from the apple store but they Australian one doesn't have it. Therefore can i still buy it from the American online store. Apart from that is there any stores in Australia that would sell this case?

Last question is; i have heard that the protective jackets can be purchased directly from the contour online store. do you know if they can be purchased from Australia?

Thanks for any help you can offer me . . .
