Install Ipod in car no radio?

Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. Hello, My uncle is in the process of building a Kit Cobra and is interested in putting a ipod in the center console of his car. However he doesnt want to install a radio and is wondering if there is a way from him to run wires to the trunk of the car. and have the ipod connect directly to an amp.

Are there any kits out there that help you complete this task? if so what are they called. if they exist at all? all info will be helpful!

thx

just run a patch cable from the ipod to the amp, just like you would from a CD player to an amp. The only difference is an ipod has a 3.5mm plug on it, and a CD player usually has RCA's.

usually an amp requires a remote cable to connect to a radio to determine whether or not to turn on/off and since the whole idea for the install into the cobra is to avoid the whole radio aspect i am wondering if there is a way to just connect it straight to the battery/fuse/ignition and have the amp turn on as soon as the key is turned... we odnt want a radio in this car. just the ipod *dont ask me it is my uncle* =)

Running a 3.5mm-to-RCA cable from the ipod to the amp won't work...it'llworkin theory but it'll sound like crap. The RCA inputs on an amp are preamp inputs and the output on your ipod is an amplified output...you'd either need to get an amp that accepts line-level inputs or get a line out cable for the ipod (which would send a non-amplified signal to the amp). However, going this route you would not be able to control the volume of the music...but if you plug the headphone out into the amp, it will be distorted and could possibly fry the amp.

The easiest way to do what bcruze is talking about would be to mount the iPod dock in the car. That way, you can connect it to power and use the line out. Plus, it'll get rid of cords all over the place.

That's not true. "line-level" is just a specified voltage, it is not an non-amplified signal (+4dBV for pro equiptment, -10dBV for consumer). Line-level voltage on a ipod is actually really close to the top end of the volume range. The only difference between a headphone out and an line out (other than volume control) is that a headphone out is capable of driving higher impeadences. Line-out's are low impedence, and headpone-out's are high impeadence, and so they need another amplifier to drive that higher impeadence headphones, and that is where the noise is introduced. A line-level out just drops the extra amplifier, but it cannot drive high-impeadence outputs very well. If you plug a normal set of headphones into a line-out, you will get music, and faily loud music (unless you use weird headphones). There probally won't be much bass, but that's another lesson ;)

This is what I get from being in pro audio for years and taking too many physics classes.....ahahahahahah :p

well, relaized that I gave lesson, but I didn't answer the question. If you read the above and were completly lost, or just plain don't care, read this:

It will work out of the headphone jack, but it'll work better off of a line-out. My recomendation would be to get the belkin auto-kit, and use the line-out from there. Then you will want to have some sort of volume control. The best option would be to use a controller that comes with you're amp, but if you can't get one, then you can buy RCA level controllers too.

It'll work, and it'll work well, but without a HU you just don't have some of that control there.

Good Luck!
