AAC support in Car Stereo

Instead us all waiting for the ideal in-car ipod hook-up...shouldn't we be beating up these hardware companies and demanding AAC support instead.

There is not a car stero deck today that supports AAC internally. If you jump on crutchfield, half of them support WMA on top of MP3.

I was all excited about getting an Alpine head unit and getting the ipod box for it...but then I used the demo, read some reviews and I thought twice.

The more I thought about it...the more I realized. I really don't want my ipod in my car. I like to have it with me through the house, at bedtime, traveling, etc. I know my personal habits and if I had one of these in-car ipod solutions I could see myself leaving the Ipod in the car, locking it up and not getting the same kind of use out of it.

Don't get me wrong I want my music in the car as well. I just think it would be so much better if I could rip an AAC cd with a ton of music on it and just pop it in and play it.

To me, this is a better solution. The ipod continues to be what it's intended a "portable" music player...and you get what you need for the car with no issues of battery life, theft, sound quality, etc.

So give me intenal AAC support Alpine...don't give me some crummy inteface box!!!

:D

You can put MP3s at a high bit rate to get it closer to AAC quality, something like 192kbps and above. I know it's not the same and I understand your concern. It's just that at this point, no one other than Apple has embraced AAC. I wish more companies would.

Edit: RealAudio's online store uses AAC at 128kbps and above. But the file extension for RealAudio player is .rax. So, apparantly Apple isn't the only one to use AAC.

oh I know there are all sorts of little work arounds...you can convert all you AAC files to MP3 (ie - fair amount of work and crappy sound quality when your done) and I know you can burn audio cd's...but 19-20 songs tops per cd.

I would just like to be able to burn 100 AAC files to a CD, pop them into my car stero and be done with it.

To me...this solves all my ipod-->car issues. With a few CD's I could have everything I would really want in my car, not have to worry about locking up my ipod or it being charged or fumbling through some wierd interface system, etc.

I just think this is what we really should be asking for when it comes to in-car solutions.

so an iPod-in-car solution which doesnt even involve the ipod itself? sounds like a step backwards to me.

give it another couple years, and companies will be fully supporting the ipod for use in the car. expect alpine to come out with more friendly HU's, perhaps pioneer or even sony (ok, not sony) to come out with similar products which will ease us into plug and play use of the ipod in the car.
