If so what's it like? volume/sound quality is it the same as playing a cd?
Thanks

I am running a 4G 20gig into the aux input of my Blaupunkt Orlando and the sound quality is the same as a cd. I am getting ignition noise (actually alternator whine) thru the FirePod power adapter I'm using, but thats a different issue. On the Ipod battery sound is fine.

Ogre, your alternator whine can be solved by using better grounds within your system. sometimes an isolator can be added to speciffically remove this.

I am running mine through my aux inputs on my Pioneer deck. the adapter is good and keeps the sound quality like cd as long as you use quality cables. I have both the Monster and the top of the line cables from Radio Shack (gold). They are about the same. Make sure you use shielded RCA to stereo cables(or you could get that engine noise-Ogre's problem).

Also, all head units are not equal. Some have auxillary inputs and some don't. Make sure you check first, because you may have to go another route.

Again, this is not RF (tunecast like products), these examples are "hardwired." The RF(through radio signal) doesn't sound half as good.

JimB, the sound quality will differ greatly depending on how you're "connected" to the car radio. In general, the quality will go as follows (from worst to best):

FM Transmitter
Cassette Adapter
FM Modulator
Hard-Wired

You can expect a hard-wired solution to be CLOSE to CD quality, but that will also depend on how your music in encoded. In most cases, the music is compressed, so there will be a loss in audio quality. You can encode your music uncompressed (or lossless) which will improve the sound, but increase the file size so less music can be stored on the iPod. Most car stereos aren't capable of reproducing high quality sound anyways, so the tradeoff may not be worth it.

Hope this helps.

I've seen an adapter that runs through your multi changer input and you can control the ipod from the head set, it will also charge the ipod for you! so I should get cd quality sound i think?

Thanks

Yes and no. That is the equivalent of a hard-wired solution. However, the compression of your music will make a difference if you compare the two. You should be getting the best quality out of your iPod that way though.

It also makes a big difference if your hard-wiring from your iPod's headphone jack or the line out. I use <a href="http://www.monstercable.com/computer/productPageComputer.asp?pin=2132">this charger</a> from Monster that features a line-out jack coming from the bottom connector. Sound is much better than when using the headphone jack.

excellent point, Monk. I was assuming he was using the line out.

Ah, html doesn't work.
This ( http://www.monstercable.com/computer/productPageComputer.asp?pin=2132) is the car charger I use. I believe Belkin has a similar product.

This is what I was looking at for my kenwood head set http://www.justkenwood.co.uk/stock01/ipod_cradle.asp

using the 420i and its close to CD quality but you can hear "compression" on the songs. Loss of mids, more bass, not as open. But this has to do with music files in general. Most of my tunes are in 128 but i tried going higher to 192 and above. Still sounds the same to me... oh well.

overall the 420i into a HU sounds pretty good. I've used Aux-Pod with some success but it didn't work for me. FORGET the FM stuff, please, don't bother! I was lucky enough to be able to return my Monster FM...

My iPod mini is hardwired from lineout (www.sik.com) to AUX-Input (Alternative CD-Changer) on my Alpine. The charger portion of my sik imp cable is not plugged into the car charger port, I just had it hardwired straight to the fuse box. :) My ipod sits on a proclip.

Works for me.

I have discovered the alternator whine is caused by the ground portion of the FirePod adapter not making a good connection with the cigarette lighter jack.....Isnt there an adapter for European type jacks?

I use the same Monster car charger as Monk and like it fine. I don't have face jacks on my car stereo so use iTrip to listen in the car. It sounds good enough for me and is very convenient. The only problem is that I have to change frequencies on a long drive. Nothing is perfect.
