I really hope you won't use noise canceling phones while riding... lol.
:D

That is exactly what I was thinking. My car stereo broke so I thought: meh I will listen to my iPod. I got about 5 blocks until I realized how much I used my lost sense (hearing) while driving. I can only imagine biking in the city.

Take a look at the Shure E5's. I have a set and they are essentially flush with my ear, meaning I can lie on my side (with my head on a pillow) without a problem. They also provide lots of bass which makes reggae sound great!

The E3c's stick out quite a lot. The E2c's don't sit quite flush with your ear as does the E5c. The E5c are comfy for use while sleeping, but their $350 minimum price tag may put you off. (at least, the messengers we used to supply bikes to for testing didn't seem to be earning that much :p )
As mentioned, all the Shure phones provide a large degree of isolation and should not be used in your situation.
Personally, on the rare occasions I do listen to a portable when sleeping I use the Apple buds (and sleep on my back). I really wouldn't suggest any Shure or Etymotic while biking. The Apple buds do a reasonable job of delivering music in a fairly intellible way while providing near-zero isolation... not that I recommend wearing earphones while in control of a vehicle.
