Curious Problem with E888s
Well, it's not really a problem, so much as a wonderment. I was listening to a paino track today on the ipod, and I noticed that while it sounded good, it wasn't quite clear. It sounded slightly muffled. So, out of curiousity, I took off the foam pads and suddenly the piano was sharp, clear, and distinct. But then listening to pop, r&b, and the likes yielded that there was slightly more detail without the foam pads, but definitely less bass and depth.
Is there anyway to compromise? Are there "foamies" you can buy that are perhaps made of a different material or something that will retain the depth but not muffle some of the detail? Or is it possible this is all in my head ;)

It's probably not in your head. Hop over to head-fi and read the hundreds of threads comparing the different types of pads for Grado phones. When I bought my Grado SR80 I compared it to the SR60 in the store and thought the highs were clearer and brighter. The SR60 pads cover the driver, like your E888, but the SR80 pads don't. I got a chance to A/B the SR60/80 a few months later with the same pads and the highs were almost identical.
Some people who have the SR60 pads cut a quarter-size hole in the pad to take away some of the muffledness. You might try making tiny holes in the center of the E888 foam pads.
