Complete Newbie Question - Pls Help
Hi there, great site!!!
I have just purchased a 15gb Ipod and have a PC with Itunes already.
However, I do not have a firewire or USB 2 card in my machine
(*) What do I need to connect to my PC?
(*) Does this come in the box?
If you could let me know ... as Im worried I won't be able to use my Ipod when it arrives.
Many thanks in advance
Paul

Amost all PCs will have USB ports (although they may be USB1.1). The iPod will work using a USB1.1 port but the transfer rates will be considerably slower (you may want to consider getting a firewire or USB2.0 card for your PC).
Also, you can't use USB to charge your iPod through the computer.
And finally, unless things have changed, the iPod will come with a firewire cable. The USB/firewire combo cable must be purchased separately. The combo cable allows you to use USB for transfer while using the firewire portion of the cable to charge via the AC adapter.

I'd strongly recommend you get a Firewire card for your PC. It is just as cheap as a USB card, and you save the cost of the extra cable.
Firewire cards are available for under $40.

I tend to agree with the recommendation of pigs_fly (adding a firewire card). However, connecting the iPod to your computer with the USB/firewire combo cable should work with your existing USB1.1 port.
Most USB2.0 devices are backward compatible with USB1.1. There have been numerous posts on this site from folks successfully using USB1.1 ports with their iPods. Just be aware that your transfer rates will take a significant hit due to the limitations of USB1.1.

I have to echo what pigs_fly says, firewire is your best bet. USB 1.1 should work, if money is an issue, but you will be downloading for hours and hours depending on your collection. Looking at the cost of that cable that you asked about, it might be around the same price to get a firewire card though. You can get one for as little as $20 in the states, so it should be pretty reasonable in GBP.
