Windows wont recognize iPod

I have Window's XP and whenever I plug my ipod in it doesn't recognize it. My laptop will recognize it fine but Windows won't. My computer didn't come with a firewire port so I bought one from Best Buy that said perfect for ipod on it. So I don't think that would be the problem. Windows recognizes it as a removeable drive (f:) but the ipod manager, iTunes, and MusicMatch all don't recognize that it is an ipod.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

did you install the software that came with the ipod?

If yes, then try resetting the ipod while connected to firewire.

Check you msconfig to see if a file called tfswctrl.exe is run when your computer starts. I had a very similar problem, but once I disable that file - worked perfectly. If that file is not present try disabling a few startup items and a time to try to isolate the problem.

Maybe its worth a shot?

All you have to do is plug the ipod in and run the restore program.
