HELP ME!MY ipod wont mount!Im stupid!

hi everyone. I'm computer ######ed, and my sister bought me a 15GB ipod, which arrived on monday, may 10th...Would that make it 3rd generation?? I don't know...anyway, I installed the itunes disc that came with it, onto my computer (its windows XP) and then I plugged in my ipod. On the screen of my ipod, it said do not disconnect. so I didn't. I ripped a CD onto itunes, then I thought it had gone to ipod (cuz I clicked import)...so I looked for the word ipod in the source list, and I couldn't find it... so i just unplugged it, cuz i didn't know what to do. How do i get it to mount? please help me, and please explain thoroughly, cuz I totally don't understand a lot of the things I read in other topics...Please help guys, so i can enjoy my ipod like you guys are...thank you in advance.:)

During the install from the CD, it should have come to a point where it said your iPod had to be configured. Did you do that?

Are you connecting your iPod to your PC via USB or Firewire?

When you connect your iPod now, does the screen still change to "do not disconnect"? If so, after it indicates this, click on Start > My Computer and see if you see your iPod listed there as a removable drive.

Also, if your iPod says "do not disconnect", you really shouldn't disconnect it. That could damage the data on it.

It's probably ok. It's just a possibility. That is why it says "do not disconnect". It would only cause damage if Windows was in the middle of writing to your iPod (transferring a song, file, etc). If it's in the middle of writing to your iPod and you disconnect the iPod, whatever file Windows was writing to could become corrupt. This is probably most of an issue if you disconnect it while transferring a song as Windows will be updating the music database file on your iPod. If that gets corrupted, the iPod would probably not be able to play any songs any more and would have to be restored. This same thing is true for Windows itself. If it gets suddently shutdown (lost power, someone pulled plug, etc) it cans screw up files on your harddrive.

If your iPod still is working properly (plays songs ok, etc.), then I wouldn't worry about it. It's probably fine. You'd probably have problems right away if it messed something up. In any case, the most serious result would probably just be that you'd have to do a restore on it to get it back to working order.

I'm unsure if you've managed to get the Ipod to mount yet, if you haven't i think you should try resetting it. Hold 'Menu' and 'Play/Pause' for 5-10 seconds which will reset the iPod. Following this plug the iPod back into the computer and it should work.
