Need advice, I somehow have double song problem
I am new ipod user, and I used the consolidate library feature, and some how ended up with everysong twice in my Itunes library.
Now I am spending several hours deleting all the 2nd files off my hard drive.
My problem:
The Itunes library still shows the deleted tracks, even after I deleted them off my hard drive.
I understand from reading other posts that there is no automatic watch feature, or update feature with the library. Seems dumb, but anyway
Whats the best way to update my Itunes library? Should I delete the data base file, and reinstall Itunes or something like that?
Anyone can help?
Thanks !!
Ryan

Was it the consolidate or the option to keep your files organized?
The consolidate command took my master library and consolidated it with a number of other folders/files I had previously imported. It did a great job of cleaning up my library, but I don't remember having any duplicates in my library after it.
The organize option put all my songs in folders by artist and appears to duplicate some songs. I use both Media Center and MMJD to organize my library and both show I have about 5700 tracks. My iPod library shows about 5100 tracks. I have about 600 tracks that appear 2 times, once under the Artist/Album folders and once under the the main library. I tried deleting the second group, individually deleting each song, and I caused more problems than I had before. I went back and restored each song from the recycle bin and gave up.
I have no idea why "organize" creates duplicate tracks. Although I don't like the idea, the best advice I received is to simply use iTunes to organize your library and let it do it's thing. It was meant to be a simple program for novice users and can do most of your library functions on it's own.
There is no folder watch or update feature in iTunes since it assumes all changes will be made through iTunes and the changes are made at that point. If you change track data outside of iTunes, it will not recognize the change until the song is played fom the library. I found a way to trick this by highlighting my entire library, hitting "get Info" and then changing the "My Rating Field" to 1-5 stars. This forces iTunes to go through each track and update the library. It's not very satisfactory since it srews up my rating system. I read that you can also change other less important tag data usiing this , but I havn't had much success.

what it sounds like you have done is gotten itunes to make copies of all your mp3 tracks and turn them into acc (itunes` signiture file type - better quality at smaller size). its up to you which ones you keep, but the easiest way to clean up your library is to organize your songs by 'type' (ie click on the heading of the 'type' column), and delete all the acc (or mp3) files. when you do this, it will also give you the option of deleting them from your hard drive.
hope this helps
