recognised then...
ill plug the ipod in via usb. then i open up my computer. the ipod is there but its called 'removable disk' or something like that. i open it up and theres nothing in that folder. then all of a sudden the whole 'removable disk' thing just disapears. its not recognised at allafter a while. also, no yellow windows pop up on the bottom right.
the only thing different now compared to the last time it was read normally is that its now running on ipod software 2.3 (or what ever the new one is).
thanks in advance
...just tried a restart with it plugged. no luck.

It sounds like you don't have disk mode enabled. When you first connect your iPod, iTunes will take a few moments and keep it open as it syncs with it. After it is done, it will automatically unmount the iPod. I'm thinking you are seeing it in "My Computer" while iTunes is syncing with it and then once it dismounts the iPod, it disappears from "My Computer". Go into iTunes and select your iPod from the Source list. Right-click on it and select "iPod options" (I think that's what it says). Then, place a checkmark in the "enable disk use" box and click OK. Your iPod should then appear in "My Computer" until you eject it from iTunes yourself.
