WinMe Help needed ASAP

Hi,
I'm very poor with technology and computer literacy, so please bear with me and sorry if my question seems obvious.
Also, apologies if this question is answered elsewhere on the site - I couldn't find anything that could help me.

I came home today from college and am due back tomorrow, so this is the only PC from which I can load my iPod, so a quick response would be greatly appreciated!!

I have a new, 3rd generation 15Gb Ipod, but also unfortunatly I also have Windows ME (millenium Edition)

While my PC doesn't have FireWire, I do have the necessary USB cable for the iPod.

Without the help of the CD provided I'm pretty clueless as of what to do, and all the help topics here seem to relate to Win98.

If someone could be kind enough and have the patience to talk me through the process of setting myself up it would be great!

(Please don't think any step is obvious - as I said I'm poor at this kinda thing! Tell me the lot!!)

I don't have much time right now, but you'll want to use the iPod software version 2.0.1 as that is compatible with Windows Me. You can download it at Apple's website here (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120298). Before connecting your iPod to your PC, download this and run it. It will tell you when to attach your iPod to your PC. It will then format your iPod and it will then be available for use.

You'll then have to find some software to use to copy music to your iPod. I would normally recommend Apple's iTunes, but it isn't compatible with Windows Me. I'd say check out the sticky thread in the Software forum here at iPodLounge. It has a list of all kinds of software you can use with your iPod. I'm sure you should be able to find some that work with WinMe.

Hey all

new owner of a 3G 20gig Ipod here with Windows Me problems. I searched the forums and this thread seemed to offer the best solution to my problem... only thing is that it did not quite work. I loaded version 2.0.1 from the apple site, but the updater does not seem to want to recognize the ipod in the usb port. When I go to the updater it says that no Ipod is attached. The ipod seems to be connected through the usb wire correctly, the ipod shows the do not disconnect message, I get the little box with the arrow icon in the bottom right corner of the screen that allows me to disconect the drive but the Ipod manager and the updater does not seem to notice that anything is going on. The ipod manager icon at the bottom right has a little red x aacross it, but he program seems to open fine. Can anyone give me an idea of what is wrong and how to correct it?

Thanks

Matt

...also...

I have seen a couple of things in other posts that I might want to try, but they are not directly related to the windows me problem so I don't feel ok trying them...

One is that I do see the Ipod as a F: hard drive in my computer... when I try to navigate it it says it is unformatted, would you like to format. I saw one post that said you can quick format it there and then run the updater... iz it safe?

second... should I try to plug in my Ipod on a windows 2000/xp machine, run the 2.0.1 updater and then try to conect to my windows me machine... is that also something I could try in this case?

Thanks

Matt

I have succesfully gotten the Ipod to be recognized by the x-play program, but still no go for the 2.0.1 updater or Music Match. I would stick with x-play, but I have had some problems with songs not loading to Ipod when drag and dropped on to the folder (the song name appears on the Ipod but some of the track lengths show up as zero). Can some one tell me what is going on and the best things to try to get the ipod reformated with the updater or connected to Music Match? This is so frustrating as I feel I have spent the better part of three days and still only have a handfull of random songs from my collection on the player.

Best

Matt
